In this weeks blog, Miss Mills (Head of Years 7 & 8) and Mr Clough (Assistant Head of Years 7 & 8), write about Bethany School’s new pupils and how they are settling in.
Year 7 are settling in nicely, getting to grips with teacher’s names, Microsoft Teams, rules, routines and the long days.
As part of Year 7 induction, Mr Clough set pupils a challenge to help them get to know each other and the School campus better.
The challenge was to create a ‘Welcome’ sign by working together to find letters on campus and photograph these using their new laptops. Each letter had to be from a different location – can you guess where these letters were found?
The welcome assembly introduced pupils to the Year 7 & 8 Team and reinforced the message: If it matters to you, it matters to us. There are bound to be worries as we progress through the term and tutors are the first port of call to work through any issues that may arise.
As induction continued, pupils were also given time to reflect on their induction and consider the positives of starting secondary school. Teachers were incredibly impressed with how well Year 7 engaged with this task and a range of responses showed that Year 7 are prepared for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
In tutor time, both Year 7 and Year 8 have also looked at what it means to “feel included” and what it means to be tolerant which is one of our key principles of kindness, tolerance, and respect. Year 8 looked at the Equality Act 2010 in detail and considered what other things should be added to the “protected characteristics” so that everyone feels valued and happy in School. Year 7 discussed these along with what they would like accepted about them, it was also a great way for them to get to know each other.
Finally, The Charity Walk took place today (Friday 16th September), and Year 7 & 8 headed to Bedgebury Forest. This year we are raising money for Cancer Research UK, please visit the JustGiving page if you wish to donate.
