Creative Arts

Creativity is an essential part of a Bethany education. Creative activities are enjoyable, develop important skills for life and are the key to success in many areas of employment.

Art & Design

Bethany has a thriving Art department, which prides itself on the wide diversity of work pupils are able to produce, be it traditional drawing and painting, digital art, ceramics, textiles, printmaking or photography. We have well equipped studios including a dedicated photography studio and darkroom. Our Textiles department produces excellent work in both constructed art textiles and fashion outcomes.

Achieve and excel
plus-circle

All pupils are encouraged to keep sketchbooks to research, record and experiment with ideas. We aim to instil a love of learning from the day a pupil joins us at Bethany, and our curriculum is designed to be modern, engaging and allow all pupils to find a specialism in which they can achieve and excel.

Open thinking and experimentation
plus-circle

We encourage open thinking, risk taking, experimentation and our aim is to ensure pupils are confident to explore the world around them using art and their creativity as an important tool. We offer art club enrichment opportunities which have explored workshops such as sports photography, landscape painting, marbling and jewellery making.

Trips and high flyers
plus-circle

The department takes the opportunity to extend learning beyond the classroom with trips and residential visits, from Harry Potter Studios to the streets of Rome! Our pupils have success in local and international competitions such as the Articulation speaking prize and the John Downton Awards. Our high flyer and scholarship programmes support our most enthusiastic and able pupils to really explore their talents. We regularly invite practising artists in to deliver workshops and utilise the learning resources of the national galleries, with London under an hour away by train.

Art after Bethany
plus-circle

Many pupils wish to explore the subject further when they leave Bethany and are well supported in their next steps to further education. We have pupils who have pursued fashion and textiles subjects at leading institutions such as Central St Martins, UAL and Falmouth University, whilst others have been successful in going on to study Architecture at universities such as Loughborough and Sheffield. Reflecting our modern world we have pupils who have progressed to study courses in Video Game Design at Rubika in France and Visual Effects at Bournemouth. Fine Art pupils have destinations such as UAL and The Slade School of Fine Art. Others still have progressed to courses such as Automotive Design, Commercial Photography, Advertising, Graphic Design, Marketing, and Product Design.

“In the creative arts, pupils gain great success in the John Downton Awards for art including having work exhibited in the Turner Contemporary exhibition. These successes reflect how the school encourages each pupil to be ‘the best they can be”

Design & Technology

Our Design & Technology curriculum allows our pupils to understand the impact of design and technology on daily life and society. Through creativity, problem-solving and critical thinking, Bethany pupils are capable and innovative individuals. By nurturing their creativity, practical skills and problem-solving abilities, we are preparing them for various career paths and enhancing their overall personal development.

“DT is very special at Bethany School. A powerhouse of creativity.”
