We are delighted to introduce the Bethany Football Excellence Pathways, open to UK and overseas boys and girls aged 11 to 18 years old.

 

Whether you are already an ‘A team’ player looking to take the next step in the journey to becoming a professional footballer or you just love the sport of football and are keen to commit to an expert programme of improving skills, with three pathways available the football programme at Bethany School is truly accessible to all.

 


What Are The Three Football Excellence Pathways?

 

Football Excellence Pathway: Level 3

Level 3 is designed for pupils who are playing competitive football to an ‘A team’ standard at school whilst pursuing their sporting development outside of school and have the potential to play at semi-professional or professional level.

 

Features of Level 3:

 

+ Individual and team tactical understanding.

+ Weekly coaching sessions up to six hours.​

+ 1 to 1 video performance analysis.

+ Masterclasses in four fundamental areas: Defence, midfield, forward play, and transition. ​

+ Thorough emphasis on dribbling, passing, passing patterns in various formations, shooting, ball control, and set pieces. ​

+ Fitness profiling each term​.

+ Individual nutritional plan​.

+ Sports mindset coaching​.

 

In addition to the football programme provided by Bethany School, pupils on the Level 3 Pathway will also benefit from our partnership with Maidstone United Football Club:

 

+ Train and play matches with Maidstone United Kent Youth League teams​.

+ Access to Maidstone United’s Gallagher Stadium for training sessions and league and cup games​.

+ International clearance and full registration with the English FA​.

+ Opportunities to play in front of professional academy scouts.

+ Gain a clear understanding of the expectations placed on signed academy players​.

+ Preparation for professional academy trials.

 

All successful Level 3 Football Excellence Pathway applicants will also automatically become Bethany School Sports Scholars, which carries a reduction on school fees.

Football Excellence Pathway: Level 2

Level 2 is designed for pupils who are already at an ‘A team’ standard for both school and club and who have the potential to reach district/county level.

 

Features of Level 2:

 

+ Individual and team tactical understanding. ​

+ Weekly coaching sessions up to six hours.​

+ 1 to 1 video performance analysis.

+ Masterclasses in four fundamental areas: Defence, midfield, forward play, and transition. ​

+ Thorough emphasis on dribbling, passing, passing patterns in various formations, shooting, ball control, and set pieces. ​

+ Fitness profiling each term​.

+ Individual nutritional plan​.

Football Excellence Pathway: Level 1

Level 1 is designed for pupils who show potential on the pitch, love the sport of football and are keen to commit to a programme of improving their skills.

 

Features of Level 1:

 

+ Coaching sessions enable players to learn important techniques, with an emphasis on receiving, passing, as well as individual and team tactical understanding.​

+ Weekly coaching sessions last for three hours.​

+ Fitness profiling each term with our qualified Personal Fitness Trainer to identify strengths and areas for development. ​

+ Nutritional mindset workshops​.

+ Mindset workshops.

Who Can Apply?

In short, any pupil between the ages of 11-18 can apply. Players will be assessed upon application with the potential to be placed into one of the three Football Excellence Pathways at Bethany School.

 

Regardless of pathway, all pupils will receive a specialised training kit to be worn throughout training sessions.

 

Our Football Excellence Pathways are designed to build an exceptionally strong foundation for aspiring football talents whilst, at the same time, pursue a strong academic education. We recognise the significance of providing a comprehensive child centred education that nurtures both intellectual and physical aptitudes, and the Football Excellence Pathways are tailored to achieve this.

Our Partnership with Maidstone United

 

Maidstone United Football Club is a professional football club based in Kent, England. The men’s first team currently compete in the National League South, whilst the women’s first team play in the SECWFL Premier Division. In the 2023–24 season, the Maidstone men’s team reached the fifth round of the world-famous FA Cup for the first time, and in doing so became the first team outside of the top five divisions to reach the fifth round since 1977–78.

 

Maidstone’s youth teams have provided many players to the first team in recent years. The most successful and high-profile product of the club’s youth system is England international Chris Smalling, who spent three years at the club before moving to Fulham and subsequently to Manchester United and AS Roma. Smalling made a total of 16 appearances for Maidstone, and whilst playing for the club he also played for England Schoolboys’ Under 18s.

All Bethany School pupils have access to our outstanding sports facilities. For those on the Football Excellence Pathway, access to these facilities will be more frequent and for longer.

Meet the Team

 

Juan Miguel Desouza

Miguel Desouza

Head of Bethany Football Excellence Pathways

 

Miguel has been involved in the industry of professional football for over thirty years, having enjoyed working with players across various age groups, and helping them improve to reach their full individual potential.

 

Miguel played for Yeovil Town and Dagenham & Redbridge in the National Conference before signing his first professional contract with Charlton Athletic aged 19. His professional playing career then continued with spells at Bristol City, Birmingham City, Wycombe Wanderers and Peterborough United.

 

Responsibilities since finishing his playing career have included time in professional academies, with roles including Under 16 Lead coach, Academy Manager and Academy Recruitment Manager at Leyton Orient, Charlton Athletic and Fulham. Miguel also currently oversees the recruitment of players in Kent for the Crystal Palace academy.

 

Invited by the FA to assist in the development and implementation of a new Talent Identification in Recruitment, he has successfully recruited and coached current professionals such as Michael Obefemi, Steven Alzate, Josh Koroma, Tristan Abrahams, Ruel Sotiriou, Hector Kyprianou, Sam Dalby, Victor Adebayo, Aaron Rose, Namdi Ofoborh and Rarmani Edmonds-Green.

 

Miguel holds the ‘A’ licence management in recruitment, the ‘B’ licence in coaching as well as the FA Advanced Youth Modules.

How Do I Apply?

We’re delighted you are considering Bethany School. You will receive a warm welcome from your very first enquiry, your first visit or phone call and throughout the admissions process. We are happy to answer any questions and guide you through the entire process.

 

If you agree that Bethany School offers an exceptional educational and pastoral experience within a small, nurturing environment and would like to register, your next step is to contact us and we will send you a registration form for you to complete. Once registered, we will contact you with further information regarding assessments and interviews to complete the application process.

 

We offer scholarships for outstanding applicants, whether this be in sport, performing arts, creative arts or academics. The admissions team can also give you details of the football sports scholarship day where players are assessed.

 

Bursaries are available to a small number of pupils who are offered a place but require financial assistance. Every bursary is means-tested and the value of the bursary is related to the income and financial resources of the pupil’s family.

The application process for Bethany Football Excellence Pathways

 

Pupils are admitted to the Football Excellence Pathways via a two-tier system:

 

  • Showcasing strong academic ability
  • Analytical assessment by our Head of Football Excellence Pathways

 

The application and admissions process is a seven step procedure.

1 – Initial Enquiry

Please email our admissions team with a recent academic report, a copy of the child’s passport and, where necessary, background reports for any specific educational needs. We would also need a brief description of the pupil’s football career to date.

2 – Analytical Assessment

The analytical assessment part of the admissions process will include a video call interview with the Head of Football Excellence Pathways. Before the interview, providing a full match video of the pupil playing football is both essential and mandatory.

3 – Video Call/Interview with the Headmaster

We will arrange a video call interview with the Headmaster for overseas applicants, whilst UK applicants will be invited for a tour of the School which will then be followed by an in-person interview with the Headmaster.

4 – Academic Assessment

As part of the admissions process, the ability to showcase strong academic ability is crucial in a successful application into Bethany Football Excellence Pathways.

 

Year 7 to Year 11 pupils will complete an online cognitive ability test (CAT4) and a creative writing task.

 

Year 12 and Year 13 (Sixth Form) pupils will sit written papers in Maths, English and the Sciences, depending on which subjects the pupil is looking to study at A Level.

5 – Place Offered

Following a successful entrance procedure, a place at Bethany School will be offered, including acceptance into Football Excellence Pathways.

6 – Contract

Following a successful entrance procedure and receiving an offer, parents will also receive the acceptance form.

 

Acceptance forms need to be completed and signed by both parents and returned with a deposit to secure a place at Bethany School.

7 – Student Visa

At this stage, the pupil must apply for a Student Visa to study within the UK (if applicable).
