Year 7 pupils immerse themselves in Spanish culture

So, this has been another bumper busy week for the Modern Foreign Languages department at Bethany!

KS3 pupils are preparing for end of topic tests, Y7 French and Spanish students have done their first half term taster of the language and are ready to start a half term learning the other language and Thursday 13th October saw the inaugural Spanish Immersion Day.

The day, organised by Mr Garcia, involved a wealth of different activities – meeting a school in Spain, flamenco dancing lesson, cultural exchanges and a valuable opportunity for Spanish pupils to practice their language. Pupils who weren’t involved were really curious to see what they were doing as they came to lessons and a massive thanks goes to Mr Garcia for his efforts on this project.

As we have had trips curtailed through Covid-19 pandemic, it is only now we are getting back to a new normal. We are hoping to run similar days in the future involving Mandarin. There is also a day trip to France in the pipeline (Covid permitting!) and we are always looking for new ways to engage our pupils both inside and outside the classroom.

The British Film Institute in London is now running courses on film in foreign languages and we are aware of the scope and range of amazing series available from Netflix, BBC, Sky and other streaming services. One way to spice up your viewing is to rewatch your favourite series but dubbed in a foreign language and with subtitles or with subtitles in the foreign language. We will look to introduce an MFL film club at lunchtimes in the coming months to show some of our favourite films. If you have recommendations, please do send them our way.
