This week’s Bethany Blog has been written by Mr Payne, Director of Sport, who gives an update from his department, including exam coursework success and the beginnings of what should be a wonderful summer of sport.
We returned from the Easter break, with teams eager to start training and looking forward to the summer sports programme getting underway. However, we have been set back somewhat by the rain and cool temperatures preventing our cricket wickets being prepared and played on. A common theme not only at school level but across many local league grounds at the current time. We hope for improved conditions in the coming weeks, with cricket wickets flourishing and the idyllic summer sport getting back underway with deck chairs, afternoon tea and some fine play.
Cricket net sessions in the sports hall has been the order of play for most players this term, and skills are looking promising for Junior and Inter teams who look to take them to the pitch once the matches get underway.
We have been fortunate to play a couple of girl cricket matches this week, away at Dover College and Ashford School. All teams played very well in their matches and showed great potential for the rest of the season.
The swimming squad continue to train with our Olympic coach, Lisa Chapman, on a weekly basis and we look forward to building on the great success of the galas last term with another good team performance at the Dulwich outdoor pool meet due to take place on 16th May.
Our Sports Scholars are progressing well in their weekly training sessions with Mr Forde, and regular competition challenges such as the plank and wall sit provide motivation and an opportunity to flex their fitness levels.
The Year 13 BTEC Sport and Exercise pupils have been working hard this term, completing their current exam coursework component which included coaching a group of Years 7 & 8 pupils, all of which were very good sessions and maybe the start of a journey towards a sports teaching career. They have also finished their Sports Psychology exam unit and look forward to a long, active summer break before heading on to the next chapter of their education.
The Year 11 BTEC Sport and Activity pupils have also led a skills session with Years 7 & 8 pupils as part of their exam coursework this week, and all have done superbly well. A special mention also goes to the Years 7 & 8 boys and girls who have been excellent participants in several difference sporting sessions.
Bethany Sport wishes all a wonderful sporting summer, whether that be spectating the likes of Wimbledon and Kent County Cricket, or maybe playing a game of cricket, round of golf, or taking long walks around the fabulous Kent countryside in the sun!
