After the success of Enrichment Week last year for Years 7 and 8, topping it this year was going to be a difficult task. However, Year 7 and 8 pupils and staff rose to the challenge and top it we did. 

Monday saw pupils and their tutors depart Bethany to take part in a three-day residential with the Bushcraft Company in Penshurst.  

Upon arrival, pupils were sorted into the tribes that they would work in throughout the week. They were also assigned their tents and shown around the camp. High on many of their bucket lists for the week was to learn how to make fire, and it did not take long before they were tasked with collecting firewood in order to cook their lunch on an open fire (burgers!).  

After a busy first day, the pupils were ready for their first night under canvas, although it took some adjustment to get used to the sounds of the woodland as the night drew in. On Tuesday morning, Mr Allsopp was keen to tell staff who had not slept over at the camp that something large had been sniffing around outside his tent throughout the night.  

Tuesday saw pupils gathering firewood in the morning before being split into two groups to rotate activities throughout the day. This saw them take part in a number of bushcraft skills workshops and learn how to fire a bow and arrow safely. Time was also given for pupils to prepare acts for a Bushcraft Talent Show later that evening. 

Wednesday saw pupils pack down their tents and take part in a number of other Bushcraft Activities and lunch before returning to Bethany by coach. Those pupils who remained on site, enjoyed a well-deserved sit down in front of a film before embarking on their summer holidays. 

The pupils were a real credit to themselves and on a number of occasions staff at the camp commented to their teachers that they were impressed with how they conducted themselves and how supportive of each other they were. A massive thank you must also go to all staff involved throughout the week, without whom (and their willingness to give up their evenings this week) the trip would not have been possible.
