Congratulations to all those pupils in year 7, 8 and 9 that successfully completed the English and Media Department’s annual reading challenge by achieving 10 points with the number of books and reading responses they completed this year. 

Points were awarded to pupils who read and completed a challenge. The points given depended on the difficulty of the book read, and the challenge the pupil chose; 3 for gold, 2 for silver and 1 for bronze. Any book read during their English lessons, DLS lessons, or library lessons were accepted. 

Particular congratulations to year 9 who are the leading year group this year with over 50% of the year having achieved the 10 points required. Year 8 were not far behind with nearly 40% of the year group achieving the reading challenge prize of an afternoon watching a film. The English and Media department very much hope to see even more pupils sharing this end of term celebration with us next year. Many congratulations go to: 

Library

 Reading at Bethany is growing from strength to strength with 256 books being taken out of the library this year. It excluded books that are read in class, those that are read in the library as part of their lessons/book groups, or books they have brought in from home.   

The library is always developing the array of books on offer throughout the year, and new purchases are highlighted on displays. A great way of reading different genres is to join one of our book groups. Page Turners will be up and running again in September, so look out for more information then! 

Well done to everyone for reading all those fabulous books this year! 

The library is open to all at Bethany as a reading/working space to a quiet hub for those pupils that need it. The library along with the English and Media Department work together to highlight events such as, BookBuzz, the Scholastic Book Fairs and World Book Day. 

All pupils have the opportunity to join in with our book groups. We participate in two book awards, Page Turners Annual Themed Book Awards and the Yoto Carnegie Medal for Writing Book Awards. 

The library is always changing, creating displays with information for topics and international events such as: Black History Month, Poetry, Pride, International Women’s Day, British Science Week, Nonfiction November, World Environment Day, Veganuary, and Chinese New Year. 

We are very fortunate to offer a Book Cover Design Competition with the help of a company that works extensively within the publishing world. 

This year we held one author visit but hope to hold two next year! This is a wonderful opportunity to hear about their journey into writing and hear about their creativity in story writing. 

There are many things to enjoy at lunchtime in the library such as, chess club, mindful/theme based colouring and an array of card or board games.  

So, next year why don’t you step foot in your school library.
