Big Ideas, Bigger Impact For Year 8 Pupils!

Last week, Year 8 pupils at Bethany School took part in an exciting Project-Based Learning (PBL) adventure. Firstly, pupils were split into teams, then, took on the challenge of answering the “big question” that had them thinking like designers, architects and budget managers all rolled into one!

The Big Question: Can you improve a space within the School to provide better facilities for Bethany pupils, with a budget of £1,000?

Armed with creativity, curiosity and a splash of healthy competition, pupils were divided into small, dynamic teams and given four different areas around the school to choose from.

Their mission? Reimagine and transform these spaces in a way that would benefit their fellow pupils, all while staying within budget!

Once their space was selected, the real fun began! Pupils jumped into action, brainstorming wild and wonderful ideas before narrowing them down to practical, achievable plans. But it didn’t stop there. Each team also had to follow a four step process:

1. Conduct thorough research to understand what their chosen space needed.

2. Crunch the numbers to make sure their ideas fit the £1,000 budget.

3. Create impressive models to bring their vision to life.

4. Polish their presentation skills to wow a panel of Sixth Form judges.

The results were absolutely fantastic! Not only did pupils come up with creative and innovative solutions, but they also showed remarkable teamwork and communication throughout the process. Pupils learned to listen to each other’s ideas, delegate tasks effectively and keep themselves on track by setting daily goals. Their ability to think critically and reflect on their progress was just as impressive as the designs they produced.

For some pupils, stepping out of their usual routine was a bit daunting, but Year 8 didn’t just meet the challenge, they smashed it! Teachers were full of praise, highlighting the positive attitudes, excellent behaviour and high levels of engagement they witnessed all week. Whether it was tackling a tricky budget or figuring out how to turn a good idea into a great one, Year 8 showed persistence and determination at every step.

Now comes the hard part, choosing a winner! With so many amazing ideas and thoughtful designs, the Sixth Form judging panel has a tough decision ahead. But don’t worry, the wait won’t be too long, the winners will be announced before the end of term!

Who knows? Some of these fantastic ideas might even make it beyond the project stage and become real improvements that future Bethany pupils can enjoy! Whether their designs are brought to life or not, every Year 8 pupil should be incredibly proud of the creativity, teamwork and determination they demonstrated throughout last week.
