Boarding House News

This term, our boarding houses have been buzzing with energy and enthusiasm. Pupils have bonded through a variety of engaging activities, such as movie nights and themed dinners. These events have provided the perfect setting for new friendships to blossom while celebrating the diversity of our community.

The Mount Boarding House

The Mount continues to create a nurturing and dynamic environment for its pupils. It is renowned for providing a supportive space where boys can thrive both academically and personally under the guidance of dedicated housemasters and staff.

Pupils came back to a refreshed looking boarding house at the beginning of this term. The bathrooms needed some refurbishment and so the new, colossal show cubicles with their power showers and the bright, airy decor and the clean, fresh feel of the bathrooms meant that they were well worth waiting for.

Also this term, a plethora of new Spanish boarders have livened up the house, bringing an increased Mediterranean flavour to Bethany School.

Mr Forde, Housemaster, and Mr Henson, Assistant Housemaster, continue to play a significant role in the house. With a passion for sports such as football, cricket, swimming and hockey, they bring energy and enthusiasm to the boarding house community, creating a well-rounded atmosphere for the boys. The Mount’s ethos continues to emphasise camaraderie and personal growth, aligning with Bethany School’s mission to cultivate a caring and inclusive community.

The Orchard Boarding House

The Orchard continues to offer a warm and welcoming environment for boarders, featuring a bright, spacious common room at its heart where pupils gather to relax and socialise.

Orchard boarders have made use of the spacious kitchen this term, using it as hub for creativity as cooking continues to be a favourite pastime among boarders. This term’s highlight has to be the pizza cooking evening!

Of course, the house is well-equipped with additional amenities, including a well utilised cozy TV snug, games room and a fitness room that attracts both girls and boys.

Under the continued guidance of Housemaster Simon Davies, The Orchard emphasises academic support while encouraging pupils to take responsibility for their learning.

Weekend Adventures

A wide range of activities are organised for our boarders each weekend, with this term being as busy and adventurous as usual.

On Saturday’s pupils enjoy trips to tourist attractions such as theme parks, other towns/cities, cultural attractions, sporting fixtures and shopping trips to Bluewater or Tunbridge Wells. They are also able to use the full school facilities for activities such as table tennis, working out in the gym or team sports such as basketball.

On Sunday’s, trips and visit continue, with some groups choosing to go to the cinema or shopping locally. Sunday’s also have an emphasis on House-based activities and rest and relaxation.

Brighton Day Trip

In September, Bethany boarders had an exciting and memorable trip to the vibrant seaside town of Brighton.

They strolled along the iconic pier, taking in the sights and sounds of arcade games and fairground rides before heading to the beach to enjoy the sea breeze.

The highlight of the day was indulging in the classic British treat of fish and chips, savoured right by the water’s edge.

Ninja Warrior Challenge

Late September, saw our boarders embarking on an exhilarating adventure to Ninja Warrior in Chatham, and it was an experience to remember! The day was filled with action and excitement as pupils tackled an array of challenging obstacles designed to test their agility, strength, and determination.

From climbing walls to balancing beams, the course pushed their limits. The indoor arena, known for its vibrant inflatables and bouncy castles, offered endless opportunities for fun and energetic play.

After working up an appetite, the group was treated to a well-deserved pizza lunch. To keep everyone refreshed and energised, ample squash was provided, ensuring that everyone stayed hydrated and ready for more.

The trip to Ninja Warrior not only provided a fantastic outlet for physical activity but also created a sense of camaraderie among the boarders. The day was a perfect blend of challenge and fun, and it’s safe to say that the experience will be remembered fondly by all who participated.

Boarders’ Bowling Bonanza

The last weekend in Septemeber was a Home Weekend and it was wonderful to have so many of our boarders opting to stay at School and take part in some fun activities.

The morning started with a hearty breakfast, after which we set off for Hollywood Bowl at Tunbridge Wells.

The bowling was great fun with lots of competitive minds and good humour on show.

Following bowling, we headed for Tunbridge Wells where pupils were encouraged to choose their own lunch venue and go shopping; one pupil even managed to get a hair cut! We returned to School at 4pm after a day well spent.

Thrills At Thorpe Park

In October, Bethany boarding pupils enjoyed an exciting and adrenaline-filled day at Thorpe Park, making the most of everything the park had to offer.

For the thrill-seekers among them, it was a perfect opportunity to test their courage on the park’s extreme rides. Many pupils challenged themselves to experience the heart-pounding excitement of the new rollercoaster, Hyperia, which, with its towering drops and high-speed twists, had them screaming with delight. The ride quickly became a favourite for those looking for a rush of adrenaline.

Meanwhile, other pupils took part in a friendly competition to see who could win the largest stuffed toy from the game stalls. The competition was fierce, but Marco emerged as the ultimate champion. After showing off his skills, he walked away with a giant Luigi plush, which quickly became the highlight of the day and a source of envy for many of his friends.

The day was a huge success!

Fun And Games At Maise Maze

Bethany boarding pupils enjoyed a trip to Ladysden Farm to explore the exciting maize maze in mid-October.

Pupils set off on foot, as the farm is conveniently located just down the road from the school. Along the way, they were delighted to spot Shetland ponies grazing in the fields, adding an extra touch of charm to their walk.

Once they arrived at Ladysden, pupils eagerly navigated through the maze, working together to find their way while enjoying the fresh countryside air and beautiful surroundings.

Boarders Dig In For Fun At Diggerland
plus-circle

During October Bethany boarders embarked on an adventure to Diggerland. Upon arrival, pupils were greeted by a lively atmosphere filled lots of younger children excited by the various construction-themed attractions.

Although initially sceptical, with comments of “there is nothing like this in Spain” pupils divided themselves up into groups, ensuring everyone could then explore the different areas and activities.

Throughout the day, pupils enjoyed a range of activities, including driving real diggers, riding in the bucket of a digger, which was not enjoyed by Mr Manktelow or Mrs Sanjaya, and even operating mini-excavators. Many pupils showcased their newfound skills, digging and manoeuvring machines with ease, although no one was keen to do it full time.

The rain held off, allowing everyone to enjoy a Brisih café style lunch as well as the opportunity to catch up with former Biology teacher Mr Philbin who was visiting Diggerland with his family.

A great day was had by all and there were even some pupils asleep on the bus home after a tough day at work!

Serious Fun At Snowsports Centre
plus-circle

Mid-November saw a group of eager Bethany boarders enjoying a day out tobogganing and snow tubing, then shopping at Rochester.

Great fun was had at the Chatham Snowsports centre, as the boarders first raced each other round the Toboggan circuit, and down the artificial snow slope in snow tubes. This was a new excursion for Bethany and definitely one to repeat.

The group then went on to Rochester here they spent a few hours exploring the High Street and finding various places to eat, from Pizza Express to Sushi to good old fashioned fish and chips wrapped in (pretend) newspaper. Rochester Castle was impressive, and some chose to visit the Cathedral, though perhaps of more interest was the very distinct busker outside.

A great day was had by all, staff included.

Boarders’ Tee Time Adventure
plus-circle

During the last weekend of November, with Storm Bert overhead and the rain looming in England, Bethany boarding pupils still managed to make the most of their trip to Dino Golf and the Tonbridge Golf Centre, and had a fun day ‘out of bounds’.

We left Bethany just after 10am and headed straight for the Dino (Crazy) Golf course which had been booked in for 11am. The course normally takes around one to one and a half hours but the boarders all got around the course in around forty five minutes due to the cold and spitting rain. On the positive side of things, it wasn’t raining cats and dogs at this point in the day.

To warm up we all spent lunch in the local McDonalds where everyone treated themselves to a very large eating session and took over a number of tables and just enjoyed the relaxation and conversation.

After this we headed back to the Golf Centre and it’s driving range where the boarders borrowed golf clubs and spent a great deal of energy hitting golf balls down the course. It was great to see the pupils enjoying themselves so much. By this time it was raining very hard indeed but we were under cover which was great.

After a couple of hours, Aldi was the last stop to restock with food for the week. Then the minibus trip back to School. It was a wet trip but a very good trip and hopefully we will do it again in the future.

New Bethany Boarding Video

A big congratulations and heartfelt thanks to David, a Year 11 boarding pupil at Bethany School, for his outstanding performance in the starring role of the school’s latest promotional video. Titled “A Day in the Life of a Bethany Boarder”, the video showcases what a typical day looks like for a boarding pupil at Bethany School. David’s enthusiasm and talent, along with all other pupils and staff who appear in the video, brought the story to life beautifully.

The evening began with a champagne reception before a warm welcome from Headmaster Francie Healy, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to the school community, sponsors, and donors who made the centre a reality. In his speech, he emphasised the importance of the performing arts in education, saying, “This centre is not just a building; it’s a space where imagination can soar, and where pupils can develop skills and confidence that will stay with them for life.”

The headmaster closed his speech by thanking everyone involved in the project, from the architects and builders to the parents and pupils, for their dedication and support. “This centre,” he said, “represents the best of Bethany School: a place where ambition meets opportunity, and where every pupil can discover and share their unique talents.”

A highlight of the evening was a special guest appearance by West End and social media star Hannah Lowther, who brought an extra touch of glamour to the event. Hannah, who has risen to fame through her standout performances on both stage and social media, praised the school’s commitment to the arts and took the time to meet and encourage pupils backstage. Her presence was a source of excitement for pupils, with many admiring her journey from a young performer to an online sensation and successful stage actor.

The Bethany School pupils put on an impressive variety performance, showcasing a range of talents from musical numbers and drama sketches to dance routines. Their creativity and hard work shone through, embodying the spirit of the new performance centre. The venue, with its cutting-edge sound and lighting systems, provided the perfect backdrop for the evening’s entertainment.

The opening of the Pengelly Performance Centre marks a significant milestone for Bethany School, underlining its commitment to providing a well-rounded education that values the arts. The facility is set to become a focal point for school productions, concerts, and workshops, helping to nurture the next generation of creative talent.

The evening concluded with enthusiastic applause and a sense of excitement for what the future holds, both for the school and the pupils who will make the Pengelly Performance Centre their creative home.
