Headmaster’s Welcome

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The fine weather has continued this week which has made everyone feel a little more energetic.

The Year 12 pupils have handled their assessments fairly well this week.

I thought our Year 10 Drama pupils performed six excellent play excerpts on Tuesday evening. It was a real joy, privilege and pleasure to watch them put on such professional performances in the Pengelly Performance Centre.

I also enjoyed meeting the Year 10 parents at last night’s parent teacher meeting. The parents got pertinent and positive feedback about how their children were progressing in their various GCSE courses and the pupils present got to hear it first hand – which is always good for confidence when the news is positive!

Next week is the last week of term. Gold Duke of Edinburgh candidates are off to the Lake District on Thursday afternoon for their qualifying expedition. I hope the weather is kind to them up there.

I am looking forward to the Easter Concert that takes place at 7pm in the Pengelly Performance Centre on Thursday evening.

Spring Term ends at the end of the School day on Friday at 4.55pm.

I spoke to the pupils in my weekly assembly this week about Mothers’ Day and the importance of mothers in society. So, your children will have no excuse if they do not spoil their mothers this coming Sunday!

In addition, of course, clocks go forward one hour on Sunday and therefore the evenings will be brighter for longer which is always a positive.

Have a good weekend.

Francie Healy

Headmaster

P.S. It is not easy being a mother, if it was, then fathers would be able to do it!

Latest Sports News

The latest sports news from Bethany School. Just one official fixture took place this week as the U14A hockey team took on Cranbrook in their final match of the season. There was also an interhouse netball tournament that pitted Kiplings, Roberts and Speakers against each other.

Bethany U14A took on Cranbrook in a closely contested match where they largely dictated the tempo. Right from the opening whistle, Bethany took control of the game, dominating possession and creating numerous goal-scoring opportunities. Their attacking play was dynamic and fluid, with midfielders linking up well with the forwards to apply relentless pressure on the Cranbrook defence.

However, despite their positive intent and creative build up, Bethany struggled to convert their chances into goals. Cranbrook, on the other hand, proved clinical in front of goal, making the most of their limited opportunities to take the lead. Bethany continued to press forward with purpose, showcasing excellent teamwork and determination, but they went into halftime trailing 2-0.

The second half saw Bethany raise their intensity even further, determined to stamp their mark on the game. Their persistence paid off when Oliver Candeloro delivered a moment of magic, firing a superb shot past the Cranbrook goalkeeper after a beautiful team move to get Bethany back into the game. The goal injected renewed energy into the team, and Bethany pushed hard for an equaliser, piling on the pressure with wave after wave of attacks.

Despite Bethany’s best efforts, Cranbrook’s defence stood resilient, with their goalkeeper pulling off some excellent saves to deny Bethany a deserved equaliser. The closing stages of the match were tense and action-packed, with Bethany throwing everything forward in search of a late goal. Unfortunately, time ran out, and Cranbrook held on to secure a narrow victory.

Although the result didn’t go their way, Bethany can take immense pride in their performance. Their dominance, creativity and fighting spirit were clear to see, providing plenty of positives to build on for next season.

Final score: Bethany 1-2 Cranbrook

Player of the Match: Henry Greig

Coaches Player of the Match: Oliver Candeloro

Big Ideas, Bigger Impact For Year 8 Pupils!

Last week, Year 8 pupils at Bethany School took part in an exciting Project-Based Learning (PBL) adventure. Firstly, pupils were split into teams, then, took on the challenge of answering the “big question” that had them thinking like designers, architects and budget managers all rolled into one!

The Big Question: Can you improve a space within the School to provide better facilities for Bethany pupils, with a budget of £1,000?

Armed with creativity, curiosity and a splash of healthy competition, pupils were divided into small, dynamic teams and given four different areas around the school to choose from.

Their mission? Reimagine and transform these spaces in a way that would benefit their fellow pupils, all while staying within budget!

Once their space was selected, the real fun began! Pupils jumped into action, brainstorming wild and wonderful ideas before narrowing them down to practical, achievable plans. But it didn’t stop there. Each team also had to follow a four step process:

1. Conduct thorough research to understand what their chosen space needed.

2. Crunch the numbers to make sure their ideas fit the £1,000 budget.

3. Create impressive models to bring their vision to life.

4. Polish their presentation skills to wow a panel of Sixth Form judges.

The results were absolutely fantastic! Not only did pupils come up with creative and innovative solutions, but they also showed remarkable teamwork and communication throughout the process. Pupils learned to listen to each other’s ideas, delegate tasks effectively and keep themselves on track by setting daily goals. Their ability to think critically and reflect on their progress was just as impressive as the designs they produced.

For some pupils, stepping out of their usual routine was a bit daunting, but Year 8 didn’t just meet the challenge, they smashed it! Teachers were full of praise, highlighting the positive attitudes, excellent behaviour and high levels of engagement they witnessed all week. Whether it was tackling a tricky budget or figuring out how to turn a good idea into a great one, Year 8 showed persistence and determination at every step.

Now comes the hard part, choosing a winner! With so many amazing ideas and thoughtful designs, the Sixth Form judging panel has a tough decision ahead. But don’t worry, the wait won’t be too long, the winners will be announced before the end of term!

Who knows? Some of these fantastic ideas might even make it beyond the project stage and become real improvements that future Bethany pupils can enjoy! Whether their designs are brought to life or not, every Year 8 pupil should be incredibly proud of the creativity, teamwork and determination they demonstrated throughout last week.

Well done, Year 8. You’ve proven that when imagination meets hard work, amazing things happen. We can’t wait to see what’s next!

The comedic charm of Ali G made an appearance alongside the lovable and mischievous crew, Gru and the Minions. Super Mario Bros brought the classic video game to life (one of the brothers even did a tour for prospective parents which must have felt surreal!) – while Rick and Morty added a touch of animated science fiction.

The eerie presence of Beetlejuice was a highlight, as was the enigmatic 13th Doctor Who, leading the way into the world of time travel. Hunger Games fans were excited to see Katniss Everdeen in action, while Sully, the pilot, added a dose of adventure to the day. Lastly, Violet Beauregarde from Willy Wonka caused a stir with their bold, purple look.

Each participator gave a £2 donation with all money raised going to Marden Food Bank. At time of publication the total is still being totted up by the bursary and will be announced next week!
