Headmaster’s Welcome

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope you all had an enjoyable Easter.

I spent the first week of the Easter holidays in Lanzarote, and had a very nice time out there. The day we left Lanzarote we had six inches of rain over a two hour period!  It was like standing under a bucket of water for two hours! It had to be seen to be believed. The rain washed away some roads and cars. A state of emergency was declared and luckily our transport back to the airport was via coach.

The children have settled back into School with consummate ease and the weather forecast for next week is very warm indeed.

I wish the Year 7 and 8 pupils well as they embark on their end of year assessments next week.

I am looking forward to the annual boarders’ barbecue that I host and it takes place next Wednesday evening (30th April).

This week’s news was, of course, dominated by the death of the Pope Francis. I remember how delighted I was when he became Pope and he decided to name himself after me! With so many current world leaders creating negative headlines for one reason or another, Pope Francis stood out as a beacon of innate goodness.

I hope you have an enjoyable weekend.

Yours sincerely,

Francie Healy

Headmaster

P.S. I thought I should leave you with a quote from the late Pope Francis.

“The Lord never tires from forgiving. It is we who tire of asking for forgiveness. You pray for the poor and then you feed them. That’s how prayer works.”

Pupils Conquer Lake District Expedition

Between the 3rd and 7th of April, a determined group of Bethany pupils successfully completed their Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award expedition in the stunning but demanding terrain of the Lake District. Based in the picturesque town of Ambleside, the four-day adventure challenged the group both physically and mentally, but ultimately proved to be a deeply rewarding and memorable experience for all involved.

The expedition began under clear skies and ideal walking conditions. Spirits were high as the group set off from the shores of Lake Windermere, navigating their way to Brothers Water. The scenic route provided a gentle introduction to the days ahead, with plenty of opportunities to take in the beautiful surroundings. Encouraged by the favourable weather, the team made excellent progress and ended the day with a hearty, warm camp meal, an important daily ritual that offered comfort and a chance to unwind.

Day two brought a more challenging trek, as the group journeyed from Brothers Water to Thirlmere. With each passing mile, the weight of their packs and the strain of the terrain began to take their toll, but pupils remained upbeat and supportive of one another. As tiredness crept in, their teamwork and shared determination kept morale high. Once again, the day ended around the camp stove, where pasta and laughter helped restore energy for what lay ahead.

By day three, the expedition truly tested their resilience. Under the hottest conditions of the trip, pupils ascended from Thirlmere into Borrowdale, a tough, exposed climb that required not only stamina, but careful management of their water supplies. With limited access to fresh water sources, the team had to think creatively, communicate effectively and share resources generously. Their unity and problem-solving skills shone through, and their perseverance was rewarded with another successful arrival at camp and, of course, a well-earned dinner.

The final day of the journey took them from Borrowdale to Langdale, navigating through some of the Lake District’s most dramatic landscapes. Though physically exhausted, the group pressed on, motivated by the knowledge that they were on the final stretch. On arrival in Langdale, pupils were rewarded with a celebratory McDonald’s, an unexpected but much appreciated treat, before beginning the journey back to Kent.

Each pupil demonstrated the core values of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award: initiative, perseverance and teamwork. We are incredibly proud of what they have accomplished and look forward to seeing them continue their journey toward completing the full Gold Award.

Healthy Friendships at Bethany

Navigating friendships can be a tricky part of growing up. Whilst some Year 7 pupils will have joined Bethany already knowing their peers from attending the same prep schools and primary schools, all will have seen their friendship circles develop and grow as they have settled into School life over the first few terms.

A lot is done throughout the year to help pupils with this as part of the ongoing process of induction. Interests can change and as a result it is a natural part of life that our friends may change over time, joining a new school and the first year spent within it is also a significant time in a pupils life where they will likely make new friends. On Friday morning, girls in Year 7 benefited from a focused session with Verena Boot, our Welfare Officer, tackling some of the complexities of friendship.

I had the pleasure of sitting in on the session and it was a great to see the girls discussing this in such a sensible and mature way. It was clear that they were confident to share their ideas and worked well to encourage each other to put their thoughts and ideas across. Some of specific areas covered were complex matters such as setting boundaries and ensuring balance in a friendship.

Whilst of course friendships change and develop over time, I have no doubt that many of the friendships formed in Year 7 and nurtured during the pupils’ subsequent years at Bethany will remain and continue to flourish beyond School when pupils leave in Year 13.

Pupils were reminded that they can speak with Verena or indeed any staff member if they are finding anything that was discussed difficult, and a similar session will be run for the boys later in the term as part of the ongoing induction provided for pupils throughout Year 7.

Enrichment Spotlight: Team Building

At Bethany, Friday afternoons are more than just the end of a school week, they’re a launchpad for growth and connection. Among the many activities on offer, team-building stands out for some. Specifically designed for pupils who flourish in a collaborative environment, these sessions have quickly become a highlight of the week.

Packed with hands-on challenges and dynamic group tasks, these sessions offer a unique opportunity for pupils to step outside the traditional classroom setting and into an atmosphere that celebrates teamwork and resilience.

Whether navigating obstacle courses, solving complex puzzles or working together to overcome creative challenges, pupils are encouraged to lean on one another’s strengths. These activities not only promote essential life skills like problem-solving and leadership but also create a space where trust and communication take centre stage.

The true magic of these sessions lies in their ability to bring pupils closer together. As teams face shared challenges and celebrate joint successes, friendships deepen and confidence grows. Pupils learn to communicate under pressure, adapt to new roles and value every voice in the group, a reflection of real-world teamwork at its finest.

Isobel Wins Nando’s Cup

At the final Sixth Form assembly of every half-term, all Year 12 and 13 pupils who have received a ‘merit’ from teachers for good work/deeds have their names put into a lucky draw to win a £20 Nando’s voucher (as well as the coveted Nando’s Cup!). The assembly was postponed at the end of last term and so was held this week instead.

Spring Term 2’s winner is Isobel who got several merits for Prefect duties, focus and progress in Textiles as well as being the Media Pupil of the Week!

Congratulations goes to Isobel – we look forward to the next lucky draw at the end of this half-term!
