Headmaster’s Welcome

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Once again we are fortunate in the South East in that we have seen to have escaped the worst of the storm Éowyn.

Year 11 pupils are coming to the end of their trial GCSE examinations. We are also coming to the end of the external examinations with the Sixth Form. Both sets of pupils are relieved.

There is a Year 11 parent teacher meeting on Thursday evening next week in the Assembly Hall. I am looking forward to meeting and chatting to the Year 11 parents.

Time marches on and it is now only two weeks until the whole School production “Little Shop of Horrors”. Rehearsals are continuing at pace, and no doubt three great evenings of entertainment await. The performances are on Thursday, Friday and Saturday 6-8th February respectively. You can purchase tickets further down this newsletter.

Our next Open Morning is on Saturday 8th February.  This is a compulsory day of School. It starts at 10am and should be finished around 12.30pm. Minibuses travel to School one hour later than normal. Please note there is no return bus service. No doubt our pupils will be their normal excellent selves as their natural levels of affability shine brightly on Open Mornings.

For those of you of a Scottish heritage, I would like to wish you a Happy Burns Night for tomorrow night. I shall refrain from making any stereotypical Scottish jokes with regard to Scottish people being very careful with money!

Instead, I shall leave you with this quote from Bill Bailey, who once said: “You have to go to Scotland at all times of the year – in order to appreciate the times when the sun does come out”.

Have a good weekend.

Thriving In Performing Arts
plus-circle

What an incredible start we’ve had in the world of performing arts this academic year! It’s been a whirlwind of creativity, talent and achievement, and I’m thrilled to share some of the highlights of our journey so far.

Opening Night at the Pengelly Performing Arts Centre

The year began with an extraordinary showcase of talent at the grand opening of the Pengelly Performing Arts Centre, our brand-new state-of-the-art facility. The evening was a resounding success, filled with captivating performances that demonstrated just how ready our pupils were to embrace the opportunities this new space provides. The energy and enthusiasm on display set the tone for what promises to be a truly transformative year.

A Festive Flourish

As the leaves turned and winter approached, the festive spirit found its way into Bethany School. Our annual Christmas Concert was a dazzling display of music and dance, featuring performances from every year group. From joyful songs to contemporary dance routines, the variety and talent on display was truly remarkable.

Another highlight was our cherished Carol Service at St. Dunstan’s Church. This tradition brought the community together, with our music scholars leading the way in creating a magical atmosphere. Their dedication was truly inspiring and ensured everyone left with their spirits lifted and hearts warmed.

Full Steam Ahead

As we step into the new year, the momentum continues with preparations for our much-anticipated whole-school production of Little Shop of Horrors. This year, rehearsals have been particularly exciting as pupils have had the opportunity to work in the Pengelly Performance Centre, the very venue where the show will come to life. This immersive experience has allowed the cast to feel at home on stage, enhancing their confidence and performance quality.

Mark your calendars for 6th, 7th and 8th February at 7pm—you won’t want to miss this incredible production!

Buzzing Behind the Scenes

While the headline events have taken centre stage, there’s been a steady hum of creativity and activity behind the scenes.

Year 11 Informal Gig: The new Kendon Music School hosted an intimate and lively gig, showcasing the talents of our senior pupils.

Devised Drama Performances: Year 11 pupils brought their own original works to life in thought-provoking drama pieces.

Key Stage 3 Drama Lessons: Even our younger pupils have embraced the new facilities, using the main performance space for their lessons and gaining invaluable experience on a professional-grade stage.

A Hub of Creative Energy

The new Dance Studio is constantly buzzing—not just during lessons but also throughout lunchtimes, with pupils exploring choreography and movement in their free time.

In the Music Department, the state-of-the-art facilities are in constant use, creating a vibrant culture of practice and performance. Special thanks go to Mr Ramsden, whose dedication has ensured that every technical aspect of our new space runs seamlessly.

Looking Ahead

As we gear up for our first major production in the Pengelly Performance Centre, we can’t help but feel a sense of excitement for what’s to come. The performing arts at Bethany are thriving like never before, and we look forward to welcoming you to experience it all first-hand.

Join us as the curtain rises—there’s so much more magic to come!

The latest sports news from Bethany School. A busy week as new seasons finally got underway with no less than 11 fixtures across 4 different sports.

Hockey | Bethany 1st XI v Cranbrook
plus-circle

Bethany’s 1st XI hockey team faced Cranbrook in what proved to be a challenging but rewarding opening match of the season. Bethany started with excellent shape and structure, competing really well across the pitch despite their inexperience.

Eddie Watson had an outstanding performance in goal, making several superb saves to keep Bethany in the game. Cranbrook, with their greater experience, capitalised on key opportunities and converted three short corners effectively.

Bethany continued to play some impressive hockey, showcasing their potential with a stunning team goal. The ball moved seamlessly through every line of the pitch before Jojo Clements-Hunt finished off the move in style. Despite suffering defeat the team showed great determination and a lot of promise for the season ahead.

Final score: Bethany 1-5 Cranbrook

Player of the Match: Eddie Watson

Coaches Player of the Match: Josh Hughes

Hockey | Bethany U13A v Lingfield College
plus-circle

The Bethany U13A hockey team travelled to Lingfield College on Wednesday for their first match of the season. It was a highly competitive game, with many positives to take away despite the final result.

Bethany started the game strongly, creating early chances and taking the lead through an excellent goal by Jake McNair. However, Lingfield began to settle into the game, moving the ball fluidly and scoring three quick goals to turn the tide. Despite Bethany’s best efforts, Lingfield added another goal before the final stages of the match.

In the last short corner of the game, Bethany executed a brilliant set-piece, with Oliver Scott getting the deflection to score a well-deserved second goal.

Final score: Bethany 2-4 Lingfield College

Player of the Match: Oliver Scott

Coaches Player of the Match: Jake McNair

Hockey | Bethany U13B v Lingfield College
plus-circle

The U13B hockey team brought a sunny disposition to a grey January day with their very positive attitude in the first match of the season away at Lingfield College.

After some last minute changes to the line-up including James Cheesbrough stepping up to play in goal for the first time ever and doing it brilliantly! As the game started it was clear to see that Lingfield (along with their numerous substitutes) had a more experienced side and for most of the match, the game was played in or around the Bethany half and scoring ‘D’.

James made many excellent saves but ultimately Lingfield’s pressure led to regular goal scoring. For the U13B’s there were good moments from everyone but stand out performances from Leo Rousham (playing his first ever competitive hockey match), Jasper Steward, Andrew Stubblefield and Digby Bishop. Will Smith also managed the defence as best as possible particularly under regular attack from the opposition.

One of the moves of the match came from Bethany however, and in a sweeping passage of play down the left hand side from Rowan Blake to Andrew Stubblefield, it took a good save from the opposition goalkeeper to stop Bethany from scoring.

Lots of excellent play, lots to develop and along with most players being used to playing football (hockey has the same principles but much faster) and their positive outlook, there is much to look forward to for this team. Onto next week!

Final score: Bethany 0-6 Lingfield College

Player of the Match: James Cheesbrough

Hockey | Bethany U13C v Lingfield College
plus-circle

The Bethany U13C hockey team kicked off their season with a match away against Lingfield College. While Lingfield fielded a team with a goalkeeper, Bethany opted for an additional outfield player instead.

Both teams displayed promising hockey skills, with some effective passing patterns on show. Greg Ejiofor stood out early in defence, successfully halting several Lingfield attacks. However, without a goalkeeper, Bethany struggled to prevent Lingfield from scoring goals in the first half.

The second half saw a marked improvement in Bethany’s performance, with the team finding better structure and rhythm. Their attacking efforts were rewarded when Orrin Carne scored Bethany’s only goal of the match. Despite the loss, the second-half performance showed encouraging signs for the rest of the season.

Final score: Bethany 1-10 Lingfield College

Player of the Match: Orrin Carne

Hockey | Bethany U13D v Lingfield College
plus-circle

In an exciting game, the Bethany U13D hockey team took on Lingfield College in a thrilling encounter. With Bethany unable to field a goalkeeper due to limited numbers, the odds seemed stacked against them. However, a determined defensive performance, led by the outstanding Harry Sweeting, ensured that Lingfield’s early efforts came to nothing. The first half saw both sides struggle to break the deadlock, with Lingfield frustrated by Bethany’s resilient defence and Bethany unable to convert their chances due to Lingfield’s goalkeeper. The halftime score remained 0-0.

The second half saw Bethany’s confidence grow. Alistair Goodman, making his debut, impressed with a fantastic all-around performance, showing skill in both defence and attack. With just 10 minutes left to play, Harry Knight seized his opportunity, driving through the centre of the field and striking the ball beautifully from inside the D. The effort caught the Lingfield goalkeeper off guard, giving Bethany a crucial 1-0 lead. Just two minutes later, he struck again in similar style, doubling Bethany’s advantage. Lingfield fought back and created two good chances, but their shots narrowly missed the target.

In the final minute of the game, Harry completed a stunning hat-trick, securing a well-deserved 3-0 victory for Bethany.

A great game to start the season off with.

Final score: Bethany 3-0 Lingfield College

Player of the Match: Harry Knight

Coaches Player of the Match: Alistair Goodman

Cricket | Bethany U15 | Chance to Compete Tournament
plus-circle

As a late entry to this week’s Newsletter, a squad of U15 pupils travelled to Westgate-on-Sea to take part in Kent Cricket’s Indoor ‘Chance to Compete’ event.

Despite being new to the competition, the team won their first two games and went into their final game with lots of confidence. Their opposition were also unbeaten, and the match did not disappoint. The scores were level with one over to go, but if you want to know what happened next then you’ll have to make sure you read next week’s edition of the Bethany Newsletter to find out.

Bethany U15 squad: Eleni Haines, Verity Davidson, Honor Cassleton Elliott, Cecily Chettiar, Mia Castle, Leah Carnegie, Isobel Andrews, Ruby Peters and Amelia Bickford (thank you to Tilly Graham for support on the day too).

Swimming | Bethany v Sutton Valance
plus-circle

Bethany School’s annual swimming gala against Sutton Valence proved to be an exhilarating contest, with both teams putting in strong performances across all races.

The event began on a promising note, with Bethany swimmers competing fiercely in each heat. The junior races were particularly impressive, with Harry Sweeting and Ollie Martin dominating their events and setting the tone for the rest of the team. In the girls’ heats, Grace Holmes and Darcey Branston delivered outstanding performances, ensuring Bethany remained competitive throughout.

There were also some remarkable debut swims from Ewan Aikman, Kasper Chubb, and Zach Lerbech, whose efforts contributed to a fantastic victory for the junior boys in the medley relay. Meanwhile, the inter girls, led by Bethany swim captain Hazeley Kalisch, put in a stellar performance to secure gold in their own medley relay.

Despite these outstanding efforts and numerous individual successes, Bethany narrowly missed out on an overall victory in what was an incredibly close-fought gala. Every swimmer demonstrated great determination and sportsmanship, making the school proud in a fantastic evening of competition.

Well done to all who competed—this performance sets a strong foundation for future success!

Coaches Swimmer of the Gala: Isabelle Hindley and Ollie Martin

Netball | Bethany U15A v Battle Abbey
plus-circle

It was a tough first game of the season for the U15A netball team, as the Battle Abbey proved to be a formidable challenge. The Battle players were tall, highly skilled and used their long arms to great effect, making it difficult for Bethany and the team to execute clean, flowing passes. The defensive pressure was relentless, and it was clear from the start that this would be no easy match.

By half time, the scoreboard read 12-2 in favour to Battle, a reflection of the opposition’s dominance in the opening quarters. However, with some clever tactical adjustments and renewed energy after the break, the team rallied impressively in the third quarter.

Determined to turn things around, Bethany managed to outscore Battle 9 goals to their 6, showing glimpses of what this team is capable of when everything clicks.

Despite the final score of 23-12 not going in Bethany’s favour, there were moments of growth and resilience throughout the game. There’s plenty to build on as the team moves forward, and this game provided valuable lessons for the season ahead.

Final score: Bethany 12-23 Battle Abbey

Player of the Match: Sophie – for her versatility and some great goal scoring

Coaches Player of the Match – Ruby – for making some key interceptions

Netball | Bethany U15B v Battle Abbey
plus-circle

The Bethany U15B netball team kicked off their season this week in a tough fixture against Battle Abbey.

Bethany’s defensive end started the game well with Eleni Haines (GD) and Izzy Hickman (GK) picking up lots of interceptions and rebounds limiting the Battle attack to only 3 goals in the first quarter.

Bethany struggled to transition the ball from the defence to the attacking end with the ball often getting stuck in the middle third with players staying behind the opposition and weak passes allowing Battle to intercept the ball. This did improve throughout the game with Bea Flanders (WA/C) doing some good work to control the flow of the ball down the court. Gabi Alfagame (GS) brought a lot more movement into the goal third in the last quarter of the game coming out of the circle to receive the ball and then getting herself back under the post to score every goal of the game for Bethany!

Final score: Bethany 8-16 Battle Abbey

Player of the Match: Eleni Haines

Coaches Player of the Match: Isabelle Hickman

Netball | Bethany U13A v St Ronan’s
plus-circle

The Bethany U13A netball team began their season against St Ronan’s.

It was St Ronan’s who got off to a blazing start in the first quarter, scoring 11 goals and leaving Bethany somewhat shell shocked with their speed of play! However, Bethany regrouped and had a much better second quarter limiting St Ronan’s to only 4 goals.

Betsy Spruce earned Player of the Match for her brilliant efforts across GK, GD and WD during the game where she gained countless interceptions and rebounds.

Against the tall and skilful St Ronan’s players Bethany struggled to move the ball down the court, getting stuck behind players and weak passes falling into the hands of St Ronan’s. In the third quarter there was a bit more team work and cohesive play in the mid court which meant Bethany got the ball all the way down to the goal circle and Imogen Morgan converted with a lovely goal. Juniper Ambrose-Gordon (WD/GD) got Coaches Player of the Match for her continuous work and tenacity in defence.

Final score: Bethany 1-22 St Ronan’s

Player of the Match: Betsy Spruce

Coaches Player of the Match: Juniper Ambrose-Gordon

Netball | Bethany U13B v St Ronan’s
plus-circle

The first game for the new Bethany U13B squad was always going to be a challenging one. St Ronan’s came out strong, showcasing the experience and confidence that comes with having played more netball as a team. They had Bethany pinned down from the very start with their sharp play and strong defensive structure, making it hard for Bethany to find their rhythm in the opening stages.

Despite the early struggles, the team showed great determination and steadily improved as the game progressed. Although Bethany couldn’t get on the scoreboard in the first half, the team regrouped and came out stronger after the break. The third quarter was undoubtedly Bethany’s best, with the team stepping up both offensively and defensively. The score for that quarter was a much closer 5-3 to St Ronan’s, a sign of the growing confidence and fight within the squad.

Isabella Goodall had an outstanding performance, making several crucial interceptions that disrupted St Ronan’s attacking flow and limited their shooters’ attempts. Her hard work and impact on the game earned her the well-deserved title of Player of the Match.

The final score was 18-4 in favor of St Ronan’s, but there are plenty of positives to take away. Coaches Player of the Match goes to Isabelle Hindley for her excellent footwork and composure under pressure, which were standout qualities throughout the game.

There’s still a lot to work on, but the team showed great potential and versatility. With continued effort and time to develop, this squad has plenty of promise for the season ahead.

Final score: Bethany 4-18 St Ronan’s

Player of the Match: Isabella Goodall

Coaches Player of the Match: Isabelle Hindley
