Headmaster’s Welcome

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the last newsletter of this half term. It seems like only yesterday that we were returning after a long summer holiday or perhaps that is just me!

There was a very successful opening night last Friday in the Pengelly Performance Centre (PPC). It was a great occasion, and our pupils once again performed excellently. It was a joy and a privilege to see so many pupils look so much at ease on the stage, and all gave performances that were of a professional standard. The applause at the end of the evening was as long as I can ever remember in any theatre. There are a small number of PPC seats left to sponsor and higher rate tax payers can reclaim 25% of the cost via their annual tax returns. If interested you can sponsor a seat here.

Our Open Morning on Wednesday was once again very well attended. The visiting parents and their children were very impressed with our facilities as well as the warmth and sincerity of the welcome they received from the pupils and teachers. Thank you for continuing to spread the good word regarding Bethany.

The Gold Duke of Edinburgh pupils started their practise expedition yesterday and are due to return on Sunday. I hope that the weather will be kind to them.

On the first Friday after half term we have a Sixth Form Open Evening and I hope that as many Year 11 pupils and parents as possible will be able to attend. We also have a very healthy number of Year 11 pupils from other schools due to attend.

On Saturday 9th November, Friends of Bethany School (FOBS) are organising a quiz night. Tickets are available online via this link. If previous quiz nights are anything to go by, a convivial evening’s entertainment awaits and there is always much more alcohol than knowledge on display!

I hope you all have a most enjoyable and relaxing half term break.

Yours sincerely,

The evening began with a champagne reception before a warm welcome from Headmaster Francie Healy, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to the school community, sponsors, and donors who made the centre a reality. In his speech, he emphasised the importance of the performing arts in education, saying, “This centre is not just a building; it’s a space where imagination can soar, and where pupils can develop skills and confidence that will stay with them for life.”

The headmaster closed his speech by thanking everyone involved in the project, from the architects and builders to the parents and pupils, for their dedication and support. “This centre,” he said, “represents the best of Bethany School: a place where ambition meets opportunity, and where every pupil can discover and share their unique talents.”

A highlight of the evening was a special guest appearance by West End and social media star Hannah Lowther, who brought an extra touch of glamour to the event. Hannah, who has risen to fame through her standout performances on both stage and social media, praised the school’s commitment to the arts and took the time to meet and encourage pupils backstage. Her presence was a source of excitement for pupils, with many admiring her journey from a young performer to an online sensation and successful stage actor.

The Bethany School pupils put on an impressive variety performance, showcasing a range of talents from musical numbers and drama sketches to dance routines. Their creativity and hard work shone through, embodying the spirit of the new performance centre. The venue, with its cutting-edge sound and lighting systems, provided the perfect backdrop for the evening’s entertainment.

The opening of the Pengelly Performance Centre marks a significant milestone for Bethany School, underlining its commitment to providing a well-rounded education that values the arts. The facility is set to become a focal point for school productions, concerts, and workshops, helping to nurture the next generation of creative talent.

The evening concluded with enthusiastic applause and a sense of excitement for what the future holds, both for the school and the pupils who will make the Pengelly Performance Centre their creative home.

Latest Bethany Blog

This week’s blog has been written by Mrs Hill, Deputy Head Academic at Bethany School. She writes about how Bethany School will continue to explore and harness the power of generative AI, using it to promote creativity, personalisation and efficiency.

Harnessing Generative AI in the Classroom
plus-circle

This week I participated in an online webinar about the application of generative AI as a tool for supporting learning. It is no surprise that it is quickly becoming a formidable ally for teachers, enhancing the learning experience and providing valuable support in the classroom. As teachers we are probably just at the beginning of our journey to apply it practically to benefit pupils, but there can be little doubt that in the next few years it will become integral to our practice, both in regard to how we can prioritise our time, so that less is spent on administration and content creation and more on the business of supporting pupils, and also in supporting us to personalise learning pathways and feedback so that learning is truly individualised.

At Bethany we are dedicated to supporting the individual needs of our pupils, however traditional education models can sometimes struggle to cater to each pupil’s unique learning pace and style. AI has the potential to analyse individual pupil performance and generate tailored study materials, quizzes, and resources that address specific learning gaps. In turn, this can ensure that pupils receive the support they need, whether they are excelling or facing challenges, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive learning environment.

Another significant application of generative AI is in enhancing creative writing and critical thinking skills. Imagine a pupil struggling to start an essay or a story; AI can help within seconds by generating prompts, outlines, or even full paragraphs based on the pupil’s own ideas. This not only aids creative thinking but also helps pupils overcome writer’s block, fostering a more engaging and less intimidating writing process. On the flip side, us teachers can also use these AI-generated texts as examples to illustrate various writing styles and techniques, enriching our lessons.

Perhaps one of the biggest selling points of generative AI to teachers is its potential to streamline administrative tasks, for instance, AI can assist in providing instant feedback to rubrics and criteria – saving time whilst enabling us to deliver more timely and constructive feedback to our pupils. AI can also help create lesson plans and educational resources, enabling teachers to explore innovative approaches to the curriculum with ease. In subjects such as mathematics or science, generative AI can provide pupils with step-by-step solutions to problems, encouraging independent learning and critical analysis. This could even be of use to you as parents as you may feel unprepared to assist with complex material at home; AI can certainly serve as an accessible tutor for pupils outside of school hours!

At Bethany we will continue to explore and harness the power of generative AI, using it to promote creativity, personalisation and efficiency. Integrating AI into our practice provides us with another channel for encouraging pupils to become confident, autonomous learners and better prepare them for the challenges of the future.

Latest Sports News

The latest sports news from Bethany School. There were a number of postponed fixtures as the autumn weather struck midweek. However, a number of hockey and football fixtures did survive the elements and went ahead.

Hockey | Bethany U15A v Claremont
plus-circle

The U15A hockey team faced a challenging match against Claremont in what proved to be a highly competitive game. Despite the effort and determination shown by all Bethany players, the deciding factor was ultimately the goals, with Claremont managing to find the back of the net on three occasions.

Throughout the game, the Bethany team displayed excellent teamwork, both in attack and defence. A special mention goes to the two goalkeepers, Eleni Haines and Issy Andrews, who each played a half and made a series of outstanding saves. Eleni’s performance in the first half kept the game competitive, while Issy’s fearless efforts in the second half earned her recognition as the Player of the Match.

In addition to the goalkeepers, defenders Sophie Finnamore and Lily Marshall were crucial in keeping Claremont’s attacks at bay, successfully clearing numerous balls from the D and preventing further scoring opportunities. Sophie’s exceptional work rate and composure earned her the Coaches Player of the Match.

The final score was 3-0 in favour of Claremont, but the team can take pride in their resilience and strong defensive efforts. Mia Castle was also named Player of the Match for her sharp offensive play.

Final Score: Bethany 0-3 Claremont
Player of the Match: Issy Andrews and Mia Castle
Coaches Player of the Match: Sophie Finnamore

Hockey | Bethany U13B v King’s Rochester
plus-circle

The U13B hockey team took on King’s Rochester in what turned out to be a challenging yet spirited match. Right from the start, the Bethany team showed great energy and determination, putting up a tremendous fight against a very strong King’s side. The team came out of the gates with confidence, and it paid off early on when they took a well-deserved 1-0 lead, following a beautifully executed team goal. The build up play was smooth and cohesive, demonstrating the teams’ ability to work together and capitalise on their opportunities.

Unfortunately, as the match progressed, King’s Rochester began to grow into the game, showcasing their strength and experience. Despite Bethany’s best efforts, Kings managed to equalise and gradually took control. Even though the final score was a 5-1 defeat, the outcome doesn’t fully reflect the determination and resilience shown by the Bethany team. For the majority of the match, the team remained highly competitive, keeping the score at a tight 2-1 margin until the final quarter of the game. This was a testament to their solid defensive work and teamwork, holding off wave after wave of Kings’ attacks.

A special mention goes to Arabella Valentine-Brown in goal, who had an outstanding game. She made several crucial saves throughout the match, keeping the team in the contest for much of the game. Her bravery and quick reflexes in goal were crucial in frustrating Kings’ forwards and keeping Bethany’s hopes alive.

Betsy Spruce was awarded the Coaches Player of the Match for her hard work, consistent effort, and contribution on the field. Her leadership and tenacity were key in rallying her teammates and keeping spirits high during challenging moments. The Player of the Match award deservedly went to Arabella Valentine-Brown, whose superb goalkeeping performance was a highlight of the match.

Although the scoreline didn’t go in Bethany’s favour, the team can hold their heads high after a valiant effort. This match was another stepping stone in their development, and they can take pride in their teamwork and fighting spirit. They will no doubt learn from this experience and continue to grow stronger as the season progresses.

Final score: Bethany 1-5 King’s Rochester

Player of the Match: Arabella Valentine-Brown

Coaches Player of the Match: Betsy Spruce

Football | Bethany U15B v Bedes
plus-circle

The Bethany U15B football team faced a tough challenge when they took on Bedes in what turned out to be a hard-fought encounter. The wet conditions added another layer of difficulty, particularly for the goalkeepers, who struggled to keep a solid grip on the ball as the rain intensified throughout the match. Bedes came out of the gates strongly, quickly capitalising on their early pressure and scoring a couple of goals to establish a solid lead within the first half.

Despite this early setback, Bethany gradually found their footing, becoming more assertive as the game progressed. Their teamwork and effort began to shine, and they created numerous scoring opportunities, pushing Bedes’ defence to the limit. However, a few key moments could have drastically changed the course of the match in Bethany’s favour, including a well-executed goal by Bethany that was unfortunately ruled offside. On another day, the critical moments might have swung the momentum in Bethany’s favour and led to a different outcome.

In the end, the match concluded with a 3-1 loss for Bethany. Although the result wasn’t what they had hoped for, the team showed tremendous resilience and determination, continuing to fight until the final whistle. Their commitment to the game was evident, and they never gave up, even in the face of tough conditions and a strong Bedes side.

A standout performance came from Thomas Gerrish, who earned Player of the Match honours for his stunning goal, which was a testament to his skill and perseverance on the field. His performance was a bright spot for Bethany and earned him well-deserved praise from both his teammates and coaches. Despite the loss, the game was a valuable learning experience, and the team can take heart from the progress they made, using this performance as motivation for their upcoming fixtures after half term.

Final score: Bethany 1-3 Bedes

Player of the Match: Thomas Gerrish

Football | Bethany U13A v Somerhill
plus-circle

The Bethany U13A football team took on a tough Somerhill team this week.

Both teams began the game with high intensity, determined to gain the upper hand. Somerhill struck early, taking the lead within the first five minutes. The match remained competitive, with Somerhill’s wingers posing some early challenges, but Bethany’s full-backs performed admirably, reading the play well and shutting down several dangerous attacks.

Bethany fought hard in search of an equaliser, which finally came through a brilliantly delivered corner. Ben Cossins produced a moment of brilliance with an improvised scorpion kick to level the score and boost Bethany’s momentum heading into halftime.

Unfortunately, two early mistakes in the second half allowed Somerhill to extend their lead to 3-1. Despite the setback, Bethany kept pushing forward to close the gap. However, as Bethany committed more players to attack, Somerhill took advantage of the gaps in midfield and defensive lines, scoring three more goals to put the gloss on their victory.

Though the result was disappointing, the team showed moments of quality, and the stunning goal from Ben Cossins was a highlight in a challenging match, earning him the Player of the Match award.

Final score: Bethany 1-6 Somerhill

Player of the Match: Ben Cossins

Football | Bethany U13B v Somerhill
plus-circle

On a warm afternoon at Somerhill, the Bethany U13B football team put in a spirited display, but ultimately fell short in a 0-9 defeat. Despite the scoreline, Bethany’s players showed heart and determination throughout the match, giving 100% effort against a well-drilled Somerhill side.

From the outset, Somerhill applied early pressure, controlling possession, and creating a number of opportunities. Their sharp passing and clinical finishing put Bethany on the back foot, with the home side taking an early lead. Bethany’s defence worked tirelessly to stem the flow of attacks, with defenders putting in crucial tackles and clearances, but Somerhill’s relentless pace and precision eventually saw them extend their advantage.

As the goals accumulated, Bethany refused to let their heads drop. Their commitment to the cause was epitomised by Leo Rousham and Jake Krovina, who were jointly awarded the Player of the Match honours for their tireless work rate and leadership on the pitch. Leo was outstanding in midfield, making several key blocks and interceptions, while Jake’s energy provided a constant outlet for his team, driving the ball forward whenever possible.

In the second half, Bethany looked more organised and determined to close the gaps, but Somerhill’s cohesion and technical skill proved too much to handle. Despite the opposition’s dominance, Bethany showed moments of promise, creating a few half-chances on the break and working hard to disrupt Somerhill’s rhythm.

Bethany may not have taken the result they wanted, but they left the pitch with their heads held high, knowing they gave everything.

Final score: Bethany 0-9 Somerhill

Player of the Match: Leo Rousham and Jake Krovina

Coaches Player of the Match: Andrew Stubblefield

Football | Bethany U13C v Somerhill
plus-circle

Hopes were high for the U13C football team this week, following last week’s strong winning performance and even more so because there were substitutes to call upon this time.

Basking in the warm mid-October sunshine, both teams started well but it was Somerhill who struck first to take an early lead. Bethany soon went 2-0 down but after a short time of sustained pressure, Arthur Seale managed to poke the ball home to make it 2-1. Unfortunately, it was the U13C’s inability to keep possession or work to get the ball back that allowed Somerhill to regularly sneak in behind Bethany’s defence, and without much cover, easily put the ball past the Bethany goalkeeper on numerous occasions.

Despite the scoreline though, Bethany had at least five chances to put the ball in the back of the net but Somerhill’s goalkeeper, who was probably the best player on the pitch, kept Bethany at bay as he made some excellent saves.

Stand out players for Bethany were once again Kip Duncan (who took up some great positions but couldn’t quite break the shackles of the opposition defence and midfield), Alex Munthali (who seemed to get everywhere) and also Daniel Stroude (who tackled well in defence and regularly worked hard to try and get the ball back for Bethany).

As always, the U13C’s kept going right to the end, kept their heads held high and continued to play with smiles on their faces. So now they have a chance to rest up during half-term and then onto the next match.

Final score: Bethany 1-7 Somerhill

Player Player of the Match: Harry Sweeting and Alex Munthali

Coaches Player of the Match: Daniel Stroude

Football | Bethany U13D v Somerhill
plus-circle

On Wednesday afternoon, the Bethany U13D football team faced off against Somerhill in a fiercely competitive and high-energy match. Both teams displayed great determination, battling hard from the very start. Somerhill, however, maintained an edge throughout the game, thanks to their superior ball control and coordinated play, which allowed them to dominate possession for much of the match.

Despite the challenge, Bethany had several standout moments. One of the highlights came when Thomas Geach made a brilliant penalty save, showcasing his impressive reflexes and goalkeeping skills, which kept Bethany in the game at a crucial point. Another pivotal moment occurred when Barnaby Coupe, making his debut for the team, scored a fantastic goal that energised the squad and momentarily shifted the momentum in Bethany’s favour.

As the second half unfolded, Somerhill found their rhythm, moving the ball fluidly and scoring multiple goals in quick succession. Their relentless pressure eventually saw them pull ahead, securing a decisive win. Nevertheless, it was another valuable developmental experience for the Bethany team, who continued to play with great spirit and determination right until the final whistle.

In recognition of individual performances, Barnaby Coupe was named Player of the Match for his impressive debut goal. Orrin Carne, whose consistent effort and contributions throughout the game did not go unnoticed, was awarded the Coaches Player of the Match for his hard work and impact on the pitch. Despite the result, the team left the field with their heads held high, having gained valuable lessons to carry forward.

Final score: Bethany 1-6 Somerhill

Player of the Match: Barnaby Coupe

Coaches Player of the Match: Orrin Carne

Who Are Speakers?

At Bethany, we have three competitive Houses: Kiplings, Roberts and Speakers. Each pupil belongs to one of these three houses who battle it out for points throughout the year in various events, and the winner takes home the coveted Jessel Shield.

This week we delve a bit deeper into 2023/24 Jessel Shield winners, Speakers House, as Head of House, Mr Garcia, explains all.

plus-circle

Speakers is named after the Speaker of the House of Commons. Approximately 100 years ago when the competitive house system was first introduced at Bethany School pupils at the school contacted the then Speaker of the House of Commons and asked for his permission to call themselves Speakers. The Speaker, a man from Kent, immediately agreed and gave permission and thus Speakers house was born.

In the 100 years since then, the competitive house system has evolved and moved with the times. In the current day, the importance of having a competitive house system is to help to encourage individuals to participate as team, and in turn help to develop teamwork and communication skills.

All competitive houses at Bethany encourage hard work and effort within each pupil participating, as it creates a sense of belonging within the community of the school, as well as creating their own school identity. All three competitive houses always reward pupils and competitors for their work, shaping them into the best future selves they can be.

As Speakers we value confidence, teamwork, respect, courage, and creativity. Courage and resilience are key to Speakers as we compete in many challenges, whilst creativity helps us bring fresh ideas to our competition. Together we strive to be strong and communicate well in and out of competition.

Speakers are the current reigning and defending Jessel Shield champions.

The Speakers competitive house is currently thriving, having taken home the Jessel Shield last year and have made an excellent start this year too, securing second place in several competitive house events such as sports day, frisbee golf and the merit system. With a diverse community of talented members, Speakers are very committed to working as a team and including using everyone’s individual talents as a strength.

This inclusive house structure creates a rich exchange of ideas and experiences allowing younger members to learn and bond with their older peers, while contributing fresh perspectives and learning from their older peers. In the future we will continue to strive towards these key aspects of our house aiming for improvements and development both as a team and individuals.

Boarders Dig In For Fun At Diggerland

On Saturday 12th October the Bethany boarders embarked on an adventure to Diggerland. Upon arrival, pupils were greeted by a lively atmosphere filled lots of younger children excited by the various construction-themed attractions.

plus-circle

Although initially sceptical, with comments of “there is nothing like this in Spain” pupils divided themselves up into groups, ensuring everyone could then explore the different areas and activities.

Throughout the day, pupils enjoyed a range of activities, including driving real diggers, riding in the bucket of a digger, which was not enjoyed by Mr Manktelow or Mrs Sanjaya, and even operating mini-excavators. Many pupils showcased their newfound skills, digging and manoeuvring machines with ease, although no one was keen to do it full time.

The rain held off, allowing everyone to enjoy a Brisih café style lunch as well as the opportunity to catch up with former Biology teacher Mr Philbin who was visiting Diggerland with his family.

A great day was had by all and there were even some pupils asleep on the bus home after a tough day at work!

Wargames Club Launches at Bethany

New for September 2024, Mr Reilly started a weekly Wargames Club. It proved popular straight away, but Mr Reilly is always on the lookout for more members.

The purpose of this club, apart from having fun of course, is to help its members build necessary improvising, collaborating, strategising, problem solving, planning, and leadership skills.

Initially, the club focused on the construction and painting of miniatures and next term they will begin to unravel the playing of the game itself. For those new to the hobby, half of it consists of the design and painting of the miniatures and terrain. It’s a difficult skill which builds patience and persistence. However once painted, the figures are able to bring the game to life.

The game itself is akin to chess but with more freedom of movement and specific nuances to bring the action. The game is all about strategy, decision making and sometimes the luck of the dice roll!

The group has been growing weekly and are now pleading me for a second session each week. Gaming will take place Monday lunchtimes and painting will take place Thursday lunchtimes in Mr Reilly’s lab in the Science Centre.

If you would like to join, please contact Mr Reilly.
