Headmaster’s Welcome

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the last newsletter of this term.

The earlier part of this week has, of course, been dominated by the Carol Service. It was unfortunate that the main road to Cranbrook was closed due to a traffic accident but in true Bethany spirit everyone got to the Service in the end. The consequential slightly delayed start did not detract from what was an excellent Carol Service.

For me, the Carol Service always signals the start of Christmas. The collection at the Carol Service is now electronic and all proceeds raised go to Marden Foodbank. Parents were asked to consider making at least a £5 donation to this wonderful cause given that it does brilliant work with those in our local community who find themselves struggling to put food on the table. Please contribute if you have not already done so by clicking here

There is also an article and full photo gallery about the Carol Service as well as another opportunity to donate to Marden Foodbank further down this newsletter or by clicking here.

This final week of term has also seen various Christmas parties for the different year groups which I hope they all enjoyed. The senior pupils even had a magician come in yesterday and were suitably entertained by him.

Today, being the last day of term, was a little different than the norm. For starters, we had our annual Christmas jumper appeal with all monies raised going to the charity Save The Children. We also had our annual House Shout competition where our three competitive houses keenly contested the “singing” competition to determine which house could sing (rather than shout!) a song most tunefully. Kiplings were the clear winners this year.

We also had Christmas lunch today. Once again, our wonderful caterers, Holroyd Howe, put on a feast fit for royalty. At the end of my final School assembly some Year 13 pupils performed a brief pantomime which was enjoyed by all, especially the younger pupils.

After such a long and busy term, your children will undoubtedly be tired, and I hope that they get plenty of rest over the Christmas holiday. In addition, I would like to remind Year 11 pupils that they have their GCSE mock examinations in January, and they ought to devote some time to revision during the festive season.

Teaching restarts on Monday the 6th January 2025 – which will be here before we know it.

I wish you all the most joyous, peaceful and happy Christmas as well as a prosperous 2025.

Yours sincerely,

Francie Healy

Headmaster

P.S. Here are three phrases that can sum up Christmas: Peace on Earth, Goodwill to All and Batteries Not Included.

Latest Bethany Blog

The final blog of this term has been written by Mr Evans, Head of Geography at Bethany School. He talks of the importance of learning outside of the classroom and the crucial part this plays in pupils studies.

Learning Outside The Classroom
plus-circle

Field trips are a vital component of Geography here at Bethany school. They provide pupils with hands-on, real-world experiences that enhance their understanding of the geographical concepts we have been studying in class. This half of term we have trips for each of our three eldest years. Earlier this term Year 11 travelled to visit the river Tillingbourne in Dorking to collect river enquiry data focusing on the requirements for their summer exams. They suited up and entered the flow, in a safe and timely manner, using a range of data collection techniques from simple distance measurements to trailing the use of hydroprops.

River Tillingbourne, Surrey

Year 12 also embarked on a physical Geography trip and developed their initial coursework ideas with a trip to Pevensey Bay and Eastbourne, where Mr Roberts delivered a masterclass in measuring the dynamic state of the beach morphology.

The Beach Hive at Pevensey Bay - the garden, the beach & beyond

In this last week of term Year 13 visited the London Borough of Kensington with a focus on developing their evaluative skills in the Human Geography field. This most recent trip culminated in a visit to the Natural History Museum. You might think that the Natural History Museum would be more suited to a History trip, but you would be wrong. Our A Level pupils enjoyed exploring the famous red zone exhibits in the east wing of the museum. This section focuses on the Carbon and Water cycles along with Plate Tectonics, all of which are modules at A Level. It’s safe to say that pupils had a ‘whale’ of a time in the lead up to Christmas.

Latest Sports News

The latest sports news from Bethany School. With all but one fixture wrapped up for Christmas, it was the U13 football team who were the only ones in action this week as they took on King’s Rochester.

Football | Bethany U13 v King’s Rochester
plus-circle

On a very wet and windy afternoon, the U13 football team played their final match of 2024 on the school Astro pitch against a physically strong King’s Rochester team.

Both teams started nervously and a combination of windy and wet conditions and little space made it hard to control or pass the ball. It was King’s though that had the early chances, mostly for their strongest and most powerful player, who thankfully didn’t have her shooting boots on for the first few shots. Special mention to Ciara Carnegie in goal for Bethany, who kept her team in the game and made several excellent saves from the King’s attackers.

However, it was King’s who took the lead halfway through the first half. Despite a few shots off target from Bethany, the score and the play remained close with King’s in at 1-0 up at halftime.

Deciding to now go toe to toe with King’s more physical play, Bethany began the second half with greater purpose and played a lot of excellent football. There was great inter-play between Darcie Vidler and Juniper Ambrose-Gordon and lots of determination from everyone in midfield, Daisy Young in particular. Bethany levelled the score with the first of two well taken goals from Juniper Ambrose-Gordon.

As mentioned, the whole team played well but it was Betsy Spruce’s strong, determined and skilful defensive play that allowed Bethany to keep a foothold in the match.

There was another goal for either team as the game ended all square. It was a fair result in the end and a good even game to finish the year (not the season).

The team will celebrate its 1st birthday in January 2025 and the progression made by all players involved over the year has been tremendous. Their overall match awareness and understanding has grown exponentially, and it is exciting to see where these players and indeed girls’ football at Bethany will go next.

Final score: Bethany 2-2 King’s Rochester

Player of the Match: Juniper Ambrose-Gordon

Coaches Player of the Match: Betsy Spruce

Bethany Christmas Carol Service

On Tuesday evening, St. Dunstan’s Church in Cranbrook was aglow with the spirit of Christmas as Bethany School hosted its annual Carol Service. The event brought together the warmth and vibrancy of our school community for a memorable evening filled with song, reflection and celebration.

The service commenced with a welcome by Mr Sturrock, setting the tone for the evening. Highlights included beautiful readings, performances by our talented Music Scholars and beloved carols sung in unison by the congregation. Special moments such as Bella’s solo in Once in Royal David’s City and the communal singing of Hark the Herald Angels Sing exemplified the spirit of togetherness that marks this Bethany tradition.

This year’s service extended its message beyond the church walls, supporting the Marden Foodbank. In the true spirit of giving, we invite everyone to consider donating to this vital cause, which provides much-needed assistance to members of our local community who are facing challenges. Contributions can be made by clicking the link at the bottom of this article.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the evening—parents and pupils alike, our dedicated staff, the readers, Music Scholars, the Bethany Maintenance Team and the congregation of St. Dunstan’s Church. Your efforts and participation brought the magic of Christmas to life.

As we close the year, may the messages shared in our Carol Service continue to resonate with you. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a prosperous, blessed New Year!

House Shout Celebrates the End of Term

NEWSLETTER TEMPLATE (59)

Bethany’s annual House Shout event started the last day of term with Speakers, Roberts and Kiplings all fighting for the top spot and becoming the winners of House Shout 2024. Each competitive house was tasked with performing and singing a festive song to the rest of the school.

plus-circle

This years House Shout did not disappoint. Houses are judged on individual roles, festivity, whole engagement, quality of singing and not only this, but each year there is a theme to incorporate and this year was “Christmas Dinner”.

Speakers opened the competition with a rendition of “Feliz Navidad” with Finn’s ear flapping turkey proving a delightful addition.

This was followed by Kipling’s take on Mariah Carey… All I want for Christmas is Stew! There were pheasants underneath the Christmas tree, lots of choreography and a delightful opening solo from Maddy and Scarlett. We also must not forget Zebedee’s inflatable Father Christmas!

The final house was Roberts, who took a new twist on the concept incorporating Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” with fabulous acting between verses, excellent narration from Keelan and Lewis giving us a fabulous version of Mr Scrooge. This was intertwined with lots of figgy pudding in their song, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”.

Once the dust had settled the judges deemed Kiplings the clear winners and they were awarded the honour of an encore.

However Roberts were also awarded a bonus 5 points for winning the Christmas Tree decorating. What a way to start the holidays! Merry Christmas.

Pupils aim to amass bronze, silver or gold points over the course of the year, and will be rewarded according to the level they achieve at the end of year celebration.

Year 7 Food Tasting

NEWSLETTER TEMPLATE (55)

During this final week of term, Year 7 pupils got to taste a large variety of different foods from different cultures for their topic of Food, Festivals and Cultures!

Food that is typically enjoyed at various festivals and celebrations (as well as some plain sweets and popcorn!) was bought for pupils to experience and taste.

Pupils really enjoyed trying something new, and although my carpet may never recover from the crumbs, it was great to see some pupils going outside their comfort zone and eating foods they may not have come across before.

All three classes were respectful and enjoyed the festivities. I hope they all have a lovely Christmas break. Wishing them a joyous New Year!

Scholars Visit TimeQuest Escape Room

On Thursday afternoon, some of the Year 10, 11 and 12 Academic Scholars took on the challenge of completing an Escape Room at TimeQuest in Paddock Wood.

I am pleased to say that all managed to complete their mission and were able to escape! Team One completed Agent 101 in a near record breaking time of 44 minutes 50, and Team Two completed Elf Magic 5 in a very respectable 52 minutes and 4 seconds. Their excellent team work and problem solving skills certainly paid off on this occasion!

Despite the awful weather, the boarders on the trip made the most of the day, determined to enjoy every moment. Though the rain poured and the wind howled, they embraced the opportunity to explore the bustling heart of the city. The festive atmosphere was palpable, with Christmas lights sparkling and holiday music filling the air. The group savoured delicious local food, sampled seasonal treats, and revelled in the excitement of being in the city’s centre as it prepared for the Christmas season.

Year 7 Christmas Quiz

NEWSLETTER TEMPLATE (54)

On Wednesday afternoon the Year 7 pupils had their Christmas event during Period 7. This comprised of some delicious Christmas snacks and festive hot chocolates provided by the Dining Hall and a “battle of the tutor groups” Christmas quiz. (Imagine something akin to a pub quiz).

The Year 7 tutor groups had been challenged earlier in the week to begin thinking of imaginative and witty team names. Points were available not only for correct answers, but also for how well the teams were perceived to be working, the quality of their team names and for anything else deemed point worthy at the time. Mr Payne’s tutor group won best team name with “Ancient Grinch”, a homage I was told to the fact they had studied Ancient Greece earlier in the term in History and that the Grinch was back on Netflix.

Pupils played through 7 rounds, including general knowledge, the History of Bethany and the world since 1866 and a rather amusing round of guessing the teacher based upon baby photographs.

All in all, the pupils enjoyed a very light-hearted afternoon competing against each other with some delicious snacks. The winners of the quiz were Mrs Duncan’s tutor group.
