Headmaster’s Welcome

headmaster-100

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope you have had a good week.

The Wine and Canapés event last Friday was a very enjoyable evening.  The universal summary of the first full School week of term for the new pupils, was that they were settling in very well, albeit were a little tired towards the end of the week.  This is to be expected with Bethany’s long day.  If it’s any consolation the staff also felt very tired at the end of the week as they adjusted to their work demands following the summer holiday.

It is sometimes said it is better to be born lucky than rich, and we were very lucky on Tuesday when we hosted our rescheduled sports afternoon.  Drops of rain started to fall as the sports afternoon ended and within half an hour there was very heavy rain.  The various sports events were keenly contested, and in the end the victorious competitive house was Kiplings.

Pupils had their individual photographs taken yesterday with military precision, with the whole process taking just less than 90 minutes. These will be made available for parents to purchase.

Our annual whole School Charity Walk took place today.  Our pupils walked around the Kent and Sussex countryside.  Once again, the weather played its part by staying dry.  As usual, the pupils behaved very well and respected the countryside code as they walked through the various designated areas.  I hope that they will now contribute promptly to the JustGiving pages set up for each of the charities.  As a reminder, Year 7’s chosen charity is The Brain Tumour Charity, Year 8 & 9 are walking for Cancer Research UK, Years 10 & 11 are raising money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the Sixth Form are raising funds for Stop The Traffik, which is a charity that aims to prevent human trafficking and stop modern day slavery around the world.

Our Under 13 A & B football teams played Ashford School last week, and both teams won their matches.  There are some football and hockey fixtures next week and I wish the teams all the best.

Next Friday evening is Meet the Tutor.  This is an opportunity for all parents to meet their child’s tutor to discuss the first couple of weeks of term.  It starts at 5.30pm so that the congestion at the end of the School day is avoided.  As usual, parents can park in the field beside the Assembly Hall.  As this event is for the whole School, there are 4 locations for these meetings.

  • The Performing Arts Centre for parents of pupils in Year 7.
  • The Assembly Hall for parents of pupils in Years 8 and 9.
  • The Science Lecture Theatre for parents of pupils in Years 10 and 11.
  • The Sixth Form Centre for parents of pupils in Years 12 and 13.

I hope as many parents as possible will be able to attend.

I would also like to point out that the Annual General Meeting of the Friends of Bethany School (FOBS) takes place in the Bethanian’s Room, which is the small room just off the main dining room, at 6.30pm.  FOBS is a wonderful organisation and supports the School both materially and emotionally very well indeed.  I hope that you will also be able to attend this.

Finally, a reminder of our first Open Morning of the year, which is a compulsory day of School, is on Saturday 28th September.  Pupils should arrive at School one hour later than normal.  The Open Morning itself starts at 10.00 am and finishes around 12.30pm.  Please note:  there is NO return bus service.

I hope you all have a great weekend.

Yours sincerely

Francie Healy

Headmaster

PS:  For the more cerebral of you, you may find this of interest which I read the other day.  A teacher asked a pupil “What is the chemical formula for water?”, the pupil replied “H-I-J-K-L-M-N-O.  The teacher said “Why did you say that?” The pupil replied “ Because yesterday you said it was H to O”.

If you look at the School website, one of the phrases that you may notice is “Be at Bethany”, but let us consider what that means in relation to starting in Year 7.

Starting a new school or even starting a new academic year can be a daunting experience. But amidst the nerves that no doubt exist, there is also a sense of excitement and anticipation for what the year may bring. For our Year 7s it is an opportunity to embark upon a new chapter in their lives, one in which they will meet new people, make lasting friendships with many shared experiences. They are embarking upon their journey at Bethany and a key period in their development as individuals where undoubtedly their character will shine brightly. It must be reassuring indeed to know that the School is consistently one of the top performing schools nationally for A Level progress.

One of the biggest joys of moving to a senior school for our pupils is the opportunity to explore new subjects and discover hidden talents. Whether they are already passionate about science, history, or the arts, there’s likely a subject or enrichment activity that will ignite their curiosity and inspire them to learn more. It is these opportunities that allow pupils to explore who they are and develop and thrive as an individual. They may surprise themselves by excelling in an area that they never thought they would enjoy, but crucially they will be nurtured and supported along the way.

There is not really such a thing as a typical Bethany pupil; we recognise that our Year 7s are all different and celebrate this. The first few weeks are spent by tutors getting to know their tutees and helping them to settle into their new school. The role of the a tutor is important, not only are they a key link between School and home, but they are there to celebrate a pupils success with them and support them through reflecting on things didn’t go quite as well as hoped. School is a journey and there are opportunities to learn more about oneself throughout. It is through knowing tutees that allows tutors provide the best support possible and encourage pupils to push themselves. The Charity Walk today provides a great opportunity for tutors to spend time with their tutees outside of the classroom and get to know them further. I remember fondly the walk last year and hearing about the various hobbies of the pupils in my group at the time, I learnt an awful lot about flint napping and animation that day.

However, whilst celebrating differences, we share the same values. We focus on our values of kindness, tolerance and respect. Year 7 have also looked at our school motto, Quod rectum quaere id sequere, which translates as “Seek that which is right and follow it”. The motto is little used now, but still as relevant as ever. It is possible to be yourself and have that celebrated whilst always attempting to do right. I believe this to the extent that I had it engraved upon our pupil of the week trophy, first awarded last week to Leo R in Miss Fuller’s group.

Ultimately, the joy of starting a new school lies in the potential for growth, discovery, and connection. It’s a chance to step outside of one’s comfort zone, embrace new experiences, and create lasting memories. At the risk of digressing I shall finish with this. So what does it mean to Be at Bethany? It means to be known, not just by your teachers but by yourself. It means to be who you are.

Bethany School’s football season kicked off on a high note, starting strong with two impressive victories against Ashford School.

Bethany School kicked off their season with an impressive 2-1 victory in a hard-fought away match against Ashford School. The boys delivered a stellar performance in what was their first developmental game of the year, showcasing both individual brilliance and solid teamwork.

**Stephen Kakouris** was a standout in goal, earning **Man of the Match** honours with an incredible display between the posts. He kept the team in the game by making a series of crucial saves, denying Ashford on at least a dozen occasions.

Bethany opened the scoring through **Jake McNair**, who netted his first-ever goal for the school, marking a special milestone for the young player. Just before half time Ashford managed to equalise after a defensive hick up.

But Bethany’s defence held strong with Kakouris remained a reliable presence, thwarting several late attempts from Ashford to gain the lead.

Not long after, **Connor Matthews** scored Bethany’s second, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead.

In summary, Bethany School walked away with a 2-1 victory, kicking off the season on a high note. This first win sets a positive tone for the matches to come, with each player showing great potential for further development throughout the season.

Bethany’s first game was away at Ashford school, and they started the match asserting early dominance, pressing high and creating opportunities.

It didn’t take long for Greg Ejiofor to find the back of the net, scoring a well-placed shot after a clever build up in the 12th minute.

His second came shortly after, a stunning strike that doubled Bethany’s lead and gave them firm control of the game.

Ben cousins added a third goal before halftime, making the most of a defensive lapse to give Bethany a comfortable 3-0 lead at the break.

The second half and Nico de Widt scored early on to further extend Bethany’s lead 4-0, Charlie Pearson then added his name to the score sheet with a clean finish from close range.

Bethany’s defence was solid throughout until the last 5 minutes of the game, which saw them concede 2 sloppy goals before the final time whistle sounded.

A great start to the season for the B-team.

Bethany School’s season started on a positive note with a fantastic training session at Marden Hockey Club. The team showcased great enthusiasm and energy, making the most of the top-notch facilities to fine-tune their skills and build team cohesion. This productive session set the stage for a strong start to the season, boosting the players’ confidence and laying a solid foundation for the challenges ahead.
