Headmaster’s Welcome

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the first newsletter of this academic year. Although I live on site, I walked to work this morning in the middle of a downpour that was of biblical proportions which ensured that I walked a lot faster than normal!

The first week at Bethany has gone well despite the weather. Our new pupils have settled in and appear at ease. The children I have spoken to have enjoyed their first week and I hope that it continues that way.

We had to postpone our sports afternoon yesterday and we have rescheduled it to this coming Tuesday and if that doesn’t work it will take place on Thursday week, 19th September.

Our sports fixtures are starting next week, and I wish our teams well in their respective matches.

On Thursday we have individual pupil photographs, and these will be made available for you to purchase should you so wish.

On Friday we have our Annual Charity Walk Day. This is a great day for the School community to get together and also helps the pupils to get to know each other better. The year groups have chosen their charities who will benefit from the monies raised. JustGiving pages have been set up for each of the year group charities. It is a sign of modern times that charity endeavours are now digital with regard to donations.

I am looking forward to seeing as many new parents as possible this evening at the Wine and Canapés event – it starts at 5.30 pm in the Assembly Hall. The 5.30 pm start is to help ease traffic congestion at normal School pickup time in the main car park. This event is an opportunity for new parents to get to know other new parents and we have swimming and other sports activities for the new children in Years 7-9 who wish to remain behind while their parents get to know each other.

Every new academic year is a new beginning and I like this quote about Mondays. “Mondays are at the start of the working week which offer new beginnings 52 times a year”.

I am looking forward to Monday!

Yours sincerely,

Francie Healy

Art Is ‘Owl’ You Need For Ewan

Copy of NEWSLETTER TEMPLATE (3)

Ewan, in Year 8, is a budding young artist after being inspired last academic year in his art lessons, where there was a focus on different birds.

He was taken by owls and other birds of prey in particular, especially after the school had the Kent Owl Academy visit Year 7’s during their art lessons when they were able to see these birds up close and personal.

Ewan’s love for art means he has been busy over summer creating some contemporary paintings of the owls that have inspired his artwork thus far.

Ewan’s skills have come on leaps and bounds since he started in Year 7. He has worked hard over summer and in his free time going above and beyond with his work, learning new skills and bettering himself as an artist.

He attends the textiles club in the art department at a lunch time to further his skills in variety of medias forever keeping open minded when it comes to new things. Ewan is currently in Year 8 and will be embarking on a new theme this term of architecture. I am very keen as his art teacher to see what work he produces over the academic year and which new techniques he tries next.

Year 12 & 13 Charity Walk

2

We are pleased to inform you that our annual Charity Walk Day will be held on Friday 13th September. The walk is dedicated to raising money for Stop The Traffik as nominated by the Sixth Form, and your child has the opportunity to contact friends and relatives for sponsorship ahead of the walk itself.

Sixth Form pupils will complete a circular 12 mile walk departing from and returning to Bethany.

Stop The Traffik is working to prevent human trafficking and modern slavery around the world. Their goal is to build resilience in the most vulnerable of communities and disrupt the criminal networks that operate within them.

Given the organised nature of these crimes, the only way to combat them is through intelligence-led prevention by collecting data from around the world and building intelligence. The findings are then shared to generate targeted action, build resilience, and systemically disrupt human trafficking.

Year 7 Pupil Of The Week

Copy of NEWSLETTER TEMPLATE (6)

Each week, in the Year 7 Assembly, a pupil of the week award is given to a pupil who been nominated by their tutor. This goes to an individual who has perhaps shone that week academically; demonstrated the values of kindness, tolerance, and respect particularly well; or represented the school or county in a positive way.

Competition was fierce this week with a good many pupils being nominated, and this is not surprising given just how well the new pupils are settling in. My thanks must go to their tutors Mr Payne, Mrs Duncan, Mr Reilly and Miss Fuller for working hard to aid this process. However, there is only one winner each week and with after much deliberation the award and a big well done went to Leo R.

Leo was nominated for being helpful towards his peers and demonstrating real kindness throughout the week. He has the joy of having the shiny new trophy displayed in his tutor room for the next week and a L3 merit.

I look forward to sharing other winners here over the course of the year.
