Headmaster’s Welcome

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the first newsletter of the new academic year. The weather has tried its best to dampen our spirits here at Bethany, but I am delighted that this has failed to materialise.

I have been very impressed indeed with just how well the new pupils have adjusted into life at Bethany, and how easily our returning pupils settled back into their routines. Indeed, as I queued for lunch yesterday with three Year 7 boys, I asked them about the best and worst parts of their first week. What was very humorous was all three of them said that the worst part of their week so far was going home! I am not sure what that says about School or indeed home for that matter. However, I would like to thank them for putting a spring in my step for the rest of the day.

Next week, like all weeks, is a busy one at Bethany. We have our annual Sports Afternoon on Monday starting at 2pm. There is a Year 10 Art trip to Hastings on Tuesday. Individual pupil photographs take place on Thursday.

Our annual Charity Walk Day is on Friday. During the various walks, pupils with their year groups. The most important element of the walk is to raise money for various charities which have been selected by the pupils themselves. Another advantage is that the pupils get to appreciate the local countryside, which is stunning and, of course, they also get some exercise. You should have received separate communications about this from the Heads of Year. You can also find out more information a bit further down this newsletter.

I would like to remind you that our first Open Morning of the year is on Saturday 27th September. This is a COMPULSORY day of School, and any absence must be authorised by me by emailing hmsec@bethanyschool.org.uk. Minibuses will depart for School one hour later than normal, please note there is no return bus service. Pupils can be collected from Bethany from 12.30pm onwards.

Our parent teacher association at Bethany called, Friends of Bethany School (FOBS), has its first meeting of the new year on Tuesday 9th September at 6.30pm. This takes place in the School staff room. If you wish to join the committee please come to the main School office at 6.20pm where you will be warmly greeted. If you would like to join but are unable to make next Tuesday, please email FOBS on FOBS@bethanyschool.org.uk and they will get in touch. The members of FOBS are a very happy and convivial group of parents, and it is always a pleasure to be in their presence.

I am really looking forward to seeing the new parents this evening at the Wine and Canapes event which takes place in the Pengelly Performance Centre starting at 5.30pm. Please do not arrive at School any earlier than this as the main car park will be very busy with parents collecting their children from School at the normal time at 4.55pm. It is best to avoid congestion.

I shall leave you with this quote from the Irish poet William Butler Yates. “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire”. I would like to think that the Bethany staff are expert firelighters!

Have a good weekend.

Yours sincerely,

Francie Healy

Latest Bethany Blog

The first Bethany Blog of the school year comes from our Head of Year 7, Mr Clough, who captures the excitement, energy and sense of possibility that comes with a fresh start. From the buzz in the corridors to the promise of new friendships and opportunities, Mr Clough reflects on what makes the beginning of a new academic year so special – especially for our newest Bethanians.

A New Chapter Begins
plus-circle

Despite the start of the new academic year seeing a drastic change in the summer heat that we had all started to get used to, there is an undeniable buzz as the new year begins. It’s the feeling of a new term, a fresh start, the promises of exciting opportunities ahead and of course a new school for our new pupils.

Whether pupils are returning to familiar classrooms, or in the case of Year 7, embarking on an entirely new adventure, it marks the start of a term filled with exciting opportunities. The start of a new academic year is a powerful moment for resetting and re-energising. It’s a chance to build on past success, learn from challenges and step forward with renewed purpose. There is a unique energy that comes with the turning of this page and anything is possible.

A fresh start can feel a little daunting at first, but every successful journey begins with a first step. This sense of new beginnings is perhaps most profound for our Year 7 pupils. It’s a pivotal transition, a thrilling leap from the familiarity of primary or prep school into a world brimming with new possibilities at Bethany. For these young minds, Year 7 is a time of incredible discovery.

The first Year 7 Assembly of the new term focused on what it means to be a Bethanian and the opportunities that lay ahead. The common theme running throughout was that the more a pupil puts into their school career, the more they will get out of it. Demonstrating a “can do” attitude and being willing to have a go at new things is an important recipe for success.

Imagine the excitement: trying a subject you’ve never encountered before, which might spark a lifelong passion. Picture the thrill of starting a new club or experiencing a new activity as part of the enrichment carousel on Friday afternoons, forging friendships with peers who share your burgeoning interests. Year 7 is where many pupils truly begin to make new friends beyond their childhood circles, building diverse connections that enrich their social world. It’s a year for exploration, for bravely trying new things – perhaps even discovering a talent or a passion they never knew they possessed.

So, as we embark on this new academic year, let’s embrace the excitement, the challenges and the boundless opportunities that lie ahead. Let’s encourage our young people, particularly our Year 7s, to seize this moment, to be open to new ideas, to be kind to themselves and others, and to make the absolute most of this incredible new beginning. The year is theirs for the making – my advice to them is to go out and make it brilliant.

James’s Week at the Heart of UK Politics

Newsletter Template - 2025-09-03T104530.546

During the summer break, Year 13 pupil James had an incredible opportunity to spend a week at the Houses of Parliament with his local MP, Katie Lam, and her team. From exploring the historic Palace of Westminster to experiencing the fast-paced world behind the scenes, James gained a fascinating insight into the inner workings of Parliament and the role of MPs. In his own words, James shares his reflections on this unforgettable experience, offering us a glimpse into life at the heart of UK politics.

James’s Parliament Diary
plus-circle

The week began with a tour of the Palace of Westminster, highlighting the history of the building – it was fascinating seeing how the four nations of the UK are represented in Central Lobby with their patron saints. I was also given a highly interesting tour of the Vote Office. This highlighted their role in providing Order Papers for the day’s sitting and also producing parliamentary documents, such as the Spending Review.

During the week I also got involved in several ‘office’ tasks. This included learning the craft of researching and drafting responses to constituency queries, as well as analysing the results of a constituency survey.

At the Weald of Kent team meeting, I got the opportunity to ask Katie some questions on camera, including what she believed was the most important problem facing the country over the next few decades – she believes that it is the lack of growth in the economy.

Throughout the week, I was able to watch several public sessions in both the House of Commons and Westminster Hall. This included Business and Trade Questions, an Urgent Question (following the announcement that the voting age will be lowered to 16 in time for the next General Election) and a debate on the ‘Role of freedom of religion or belief in UK foreign policy’.

On my final day, I was able to try Parliament’s famous jerk chicken (which was delicious!) on the terrace overlooking the River Thames.

One of the strangest experiences was walking along the same corridors as MPs, queuing in the same queues. During the four days, I was thoroughly engaged in MP spotting, seeing the likes of Daisy Cooper, Sir Jeremy Hunt, Jim Shannon, Adrian Ramsey, Rachel Maskell and Lee Anderson amongst many others – people usually only seen on TV!

This experience gave me an incredible insight into life at the heart of UK politics and the work of an MP and their team. It was inspiring, educational and an experience I will always remember.

Pupils of the Week

Each week in Assembly, ‘Pupil of the Week’ awards are given to pupils across the various year groups who have been nominated by their tutor.

This could go to an individual who has perhaps shone that week academically; demonstrated the values of kindness, tolerance, and respect particularly well; or represented the school or county in a positive way.

Bethany Pupils of the Week

Year 7 Pupil of the Week is Morgan

This week it was a tough decision; we have been impressed with how well Year 7 are settling in and throwing themselves into School life. The first Pupil of the Week this year goes to a pupil who has shown resilience, attempting to solve problems for themselves which is not always easy especially when everything is new. A huge well done to Morgan!

Year 8 Pupil of the Week is Finn

Finn started at Bethany School as a new pupil last week and has settled in fantastically well. Miss King has been noted as saying that it feels like he has always been part of the year group. Well done, Finn and keep up the good work!

Year 9 Pupil of the Week is Andrew

Andrew has begun the new school year exceptionally well. He has been really engaged in lessons and has been contributing well on the sports pitch too! Andrew has also kindly been a shadow/buddy for a new pupil joining Year 9. A deserved winner of the first Pupil of the Week for the new school year. Well done, Andrew!

Key Stage 4 Pupil of the Week is Gus

Gus has tackled Year 10 head on and has already had a flurry of merits for his positive engagement with History, Religious Studies and Physical Education. He has set high standards for himself and so has been rewarded with Pupil of the Week this week.

Dear Parents,

A huge welcome, or welcome back, from the Friends of Bethany (FOBS). We hope everyone is settling in well.

FOBS are always looking for new members and we really would appreciate your help and support. We are a small group of parents and ex-parents made up of working Mums and Dads from lawyers to the self employed running their own businesses. We are a friendly bunch who help organise social and fundraising events to help integrate Bethany families and raise money for projects at school and for charities.

We are on the lookout for members who can offer just a couple of hours each term to as many hours as you would like to offer. This time is spent helping to organise and run events such as the Year 7 and 8 disco, parents evening events such as a quiz night or comedy night, or perhaps smaller workshops such as a chocolate truffle or arty block printing events. We also help support the school by serving refreshments at the amazing performances in the Pengelly Performance Centre.

We warmly invite you to our next meeting which is Tuesday 9th September at 630pm. The meeting takes place in the school staff room. Please come to the school office and we will meet you there.

We welcome you and your ideas to make FOBS even bigger and better.

If you are unable to make next Tuesday but are interested in helping please drop us an email at FOBS@bethanyschool.org.uk and we will get in touch.

Thank you and we look forward to meeting you soon.

Kindest regards,

Kate Foster
