Headmaster’s Welcome

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the last newsletter of this academic year.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Junior School production “Curtain Call” performances on Thursday and Friday last week, which contained excellent excerpts from 9 West End shows.  Once again it was great to see so many pupils involved both on stage and behind the scenes.  All showed unity of purpose and their enjoyment in participating was obvious for everyone to see.

Although this final week has been only four days, long these final three days have been busier than ever. Year 7 have been involved in visits to Port Lympne Zoo, Bewl Water and the Harry Potter World, Year 8 have ventured out to Bewl Water, Leeds Castle and the Natural History Museum in London.  Year 9 have been training for the Duke of Edinburgh award with various walks around the countryside as well as guidance on how to survive outdoors.  Year 10 visited St. Andrew’s Lake, Bedgebury and Port Lymphne, whilst Year 12 spent two days preparing for their future and also had a most enjoyable day in Thorpe Park yesterday.  In addition, those pupils undertaking their silver Duke of Edinburgh programme went on the Silver expedition.

The term has certainly ended on a high and both staff and pupils will be understandably tired.

Although it seems at this stage that there is a long summer holiday ahead, it goes quickly and before you know it it will be time to return to School. There is an induction day for new Year 7 pupils and a Year 12 Parent Teacher meeting on Thursday the 29th of August with the first teaching day of term the following day, Friday 30th of August, which would you believe is 8 weeks from tomorrow!

I hope you all have a most enjoyable summer with your families.  For those of you going overseas on holiday I hope that you experience trouble free travel and for those of you staying at home I hope that you will have warm summer weather.

Given the time of year the following seemed appropriate.

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.” John Lubbock, The Use of Life

Yours sincerely,

Over 40 pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 performed in this years Junior Production. “Curtain Call” was a showcase of famous West End productions over the years. “Mary Poppins”, “My Fair Lady” and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” were some of the extracts performed over the two evening run.

“The pupils were exceptional”, Alex Bolton, Director of Performing Arts spoke passionately on the production, “for many this was their first opportunity to take centre stage and they did so with such flair.”

Although for many pupils this was their first outing in public performances this production was to be the final performance in the Assembly Hall. “What a wonderful send off” Alex reflected, “the Assembly Hall has served us well over the many years as a performance space, but as the pupils demonstrated it is time for us to move into a building that can cater for the technical demands shows such as this require.”

The performance evenings were well attended as usual with over 100 parents, staff and family coming to support the show. The show enabled pupils to experience the three disciplines of performing arts with Dance, Music and Drama all working together, the finale of “Supercalifragalisticexpialdoscious” from “Mary Poppins” ended the show on an absolute High. “I am in awe of the pupils, grateful to the team for pulling together and thankful for the support of the parents”, Alex and the team are now in pre-production for next year’s whole school production which will take place in the Performing Arts Centre in 2025.

Year 7 Enrichment Week

Activities week is always a fitting end to the year and a great way for the Year 7s to celebrate completing their first year at Bethany. This year, the pupils visited Port Lympne, took part in water based activities and team building day at Bewl Water Outdoor Centre and finished with a visit to Warner Bros Harry Potter Studio.

Tuesday

The week began with a visit to Port Lympne which was much enjoyed by both pupils and staff. An open top safari had been organised for soon after arrival where pupils saw a mix of endangered species from around the world. They benefited from expert commentary from one of their guides informing us of their important conservation work on our way around. Everybody had their favourite zones and our timing on the safari seemed brilliant with us seeing giraffes up close. Mr Beckham particularly enjoyed the “Asian Experience”, but the pupil favourite appeared to be the “African Experience” where they say giraffes up close.

After the safari ,there was a brief pitstop for lunch for pupils to refuel with some ham and cheese rolls before we began a walking tour of the zoo. Pupils saw some very excitable gorillas and despite the drizzle were treated to seeing the bears scaling the trees in their enclosure.

It was a brilliant day and a great start to the week.

Wednesday

Wednesday saw a more active focus for the day, with the trip to Bewl Water. The pupils were split into two large groups for this with canoeing and raft building planned for the day. It was great to see the pupils working together to build some pretty impressive rafts. However, they swiftly disintegrated when they put them through their paces. It was clear, that if this was a desert island, the pupils may be there for some time. The other group took part in canoeing paddled off for a tour of Bewl and to learn some water skills.

A leisurely stop for lunch saw some very tired pupils refuel on some welcome ham and cheese rolls before embarking on the activity that they had left. We were asked if we minded their work experience volunteer joining the instructors for the afternoon, and a familiar face appeared in the form of Aubrey, a Year 11 Bethany pupil, who was a welcome surprise. He aided in preparing the pupils for what they were up to in the afternoon and one would never have guessed he was fresh out of his GCSE examinations given how confident and knowledgeable he was.

Despite the rain, which almost seemed to encourage pupils to through themselves (both literally and metaphorically) into the water and their challenges, a fantastic day was had and there were some very tired Year 7’s on the bus back to School.

Thursday

Today we visited Warner Bros Studios and entered the world of Harry Potter. It always amazes me how much we manage to cram into the three days and it is great to see the pupils shine in very different lights. Many have been speaking about how much they were looking forward to today’s trip, including myself.

The pupils have been a real credit to themselves and it has been a pleasure seeing them really grow during their first year at Bethany. Of course, this week would not be possible without the dedication of those who staff it and therefore I save the last line of this article to thank them and to wish both pupils and staff a very relaxing and well-earned summer holiday.

Year 8 Enrichment Week

For activities week this year, our Year 8 pupils embarked on three daytrips, packed with adventure, history, and learning.

Day 1: Bewl Water Rafting and Canoeing

On Tuesday, pupils headed to the picturesque Bewl Water, where they participated in thrilling rafting and canoeing activities. These team-building exercises challenged our pupils to work together, communicate effectively, and support one another. Despite a few wobbly starts, the pupils quickly found their rhythm and navigated the waters with increasing confidence and skill. The day concluded with a sense of accomplishment and camaraderie as teams built and tested their own rafts and completed in raft race.  Points were awarded for leadership, teamwork and communication.

Day 2: Exploring the Wonders of Leeds Castle

Wednesday saw the pupils travelling to the historic Leeds Castle near Maidstone. The day was filled with a variety of engaging activities.

Self-Guided Castle Tour: Pupils roamed the beautiful halls and grounds of Leeds Castle, soaking up its rich history.  Pupils participated in an A-Z challenge, identifying and noting various historical facts and curiosities around the castle. Points were awarded for their discoveries and enthusiasm but no one found the sharkskin for ‘s’ covering a dressing table.

Falconry Display: An awe-inspiring falconry display showcased the agility and precision of magnificent owls and hawks as well as up close visits with a 5 week old owlet, a spectacled owl and a melanistic barn owl.

Maze and Grotto: Navigating the intricate maze and discovering the secrets of the grotto was a highlight for many.

Shops and Dog Collar Museum: A visit to the unique Dog Collar Museum and the quaint castle shops provided a delightful break.

Obstacle Course and playground: An exciting obstacle course tested the pupils’ agility and endurance.

Day 3: Natural History Museum, London

The final day of the trip took pupils to the iconic Natural History Museum in London. Here, they engaged in a fact-finding task, exploring the vast collections and exhibits. From dinosaurs to precious gems, the pupils marvelled at the wonders of natural history. The fact-finding task encouraged them to delve deeper into the exhibits, fostering curiosity and a love for learning.

At the end of the trip, points were tallied from all activities. The team with the highest score was awarded a special geode smashing kit, much to their delight. This kit allows pupils to break open geodes, discovering the stunning crystals inside—an apt reward for a trip filled with exploration and discovery.

This trip was more than just a break from the classroom; it was an opportunity for our Year 8 pupils to bond, challenge themselves, and learn in an interactive and dynamic environment. The teamwork and enthusiasm displayed by all were truly commendable.

A big thank you to the teachers and staff who organised and supervised the trip, ensuring a safe and memorable experience for everyone involved: Mr Beckham, Mr Clough, Mrs Iles, Mrs Mewett, Mrs Shapland, Mrs Smart, Mr Watts and Mr Roberts.

Tuesday

Tuesday saw pupils stay on the school site and hone their skills. Navigation skills were learned and practised as well as receiving a cookery masterclass. They were also shown how to properly pitch a tent safely and so it would suitably protect them from the elements. All of these skills would be vital for the rest of the week.

Wednesday

On Wednesday pupils were dropped of in Matfield with the objective of putting their navigation skills into a real life situation for them to make their way back to the Bethany School site. All pupils were successful in this and were then tasked with pitching their tents for their overnight stay. Cooking skills were put into practice afterwards with pupils enjoying pasta and hot chocolate as their evening meal before retiring for the evening.

Thursday

The final day saw pupils have breakfast before setting off on their second walk of the week. The objective this time was to reach Knoxbridge, before being picked up in a Bethany minibus. All pupils were successful in this task and the entire week was a resounding success!

Tuesday

On Tuesday our intrepid group of adventurers kicked off the week with a trip to St Andrews Lakes. Pupils were able to put their raft building skills to good use and try out their floatation devices on the water. Their planning abilities were put to good use and it was a pleasure to see them work together in teams to create a raft using limited logs, rope and barrels. Despite their great efforts the Key Stage 4 team were pleased to see them all in the water in no time. This did not deter the Year 10’s from trying out their balancing ability as they headed off for paddle boarding. It is worth noting at this point that the weather had been glorious this past week, up until now. With Year 10 safely on their paddle boards the rain descended upon them but this did not stop them from all standing tall especially as the water temperature was warmer than the air temperature! The final activity of the day was the famous aqua park and our gang headed out to the floating assault course with enthusiasm. Jumping, balancing and sliding were all part of the menu and with the weather finally clearing up they really got to enjoy themselves.

Wednesday

Day 2 of our expedition took Year 10 to Bedgebury and the high ropes course. It was here that many of our pupils were able to traverse along the trees, zip slide across the wood and climb cargo nets until they were well and truly tired out. After the high ropes course was completed the Year 10 team headed back to Bethany for an afternoon of rounders, football or for those who well and truly tired out a movie on the big screen.

Thursday

Finally Thursday beckoned and with that came a trip to Port Lympne Zoo. The sun was shining and the stunning countryside provided a perfect backdrop for a day of learning more about Gorillas, Lamas, Wallabies and Hippo’s. The day included a safari trip around the park which enabled everyone to see all of them animals in their environments.

Over the three days staff at all of the different venues commented on the excellent behaviour from our pupils and many noted how respectful they were to others. This activities week was a pleasure to be part of and our children did themselves and the school very proud. This was a great experience for our young people and a lovely way to start the summer.

Tuesday

This started on Day 1 with a masterclass from Jane Marshall on all things personal statement, which is used in UCAS/apprenticeship/employment applications.  Mr Khan also gave a session on finance/budgeting post Bethany – a key skill.  The day finished with a game of dodgeball where pupils dodged, dipped, ducked, dived and dodged!

Wednesday

On Day 2 we had a jolly and took the group to Thorpe Park for the day where Mr Khan and myself had the now annual job of babysitting giant stuffed prizes in the coffee shop whilst the rest of Year 12 went searching for adrenaline on the rides, despite a somewhat overcast day! Mr Willis and Mrs Fuller also came along but even the spinning tea cups was too much for them!

Thursday

On Day 3 we had Anne Cameron in, a Level 7 qualified careers counsellor. She did a masterclass on CVs which Year 12 promised to put to good use in seeking summer jobs (parents please take note of this!).  She then had 1 on 1 appointments with every single Year 12 pupil and set out a summer action plan to ensure that the career trajectory they were looking at was the correct one for them, and to support those that were unsure of what they wanted to do.  Whilst the 1 on 1 appointments were going on pupils completed their first draft of their personal statements and sent them to their form tutors for feedback – an important process to get UCAS/apprenticeship/employment ready for the autumn term. The day finished with a Zumba session in the sports hall with an external instructor where pupils worked up a sweat!

Huge thanks to all staff for their support this week as well as our guest speakers and indeed the Year 12 pupils who made it an enjoyable and most importantly productive week.

Year 7 & 8 Science Challenge

NEWSLETTER TEMPLATE - 2024-07-03T105938.079

In science lessons some of the pupils had the challenge of designing a “balloon car” for homework.

The challenge was for the car to travel the greatest distance in a straight line.  Some great designs were seen taking account of friction, air resistance, weight and how to keep the car going straight with a big balloon on the roof!

In Year 7 Raff (set 2) won the challenge, in Year 8L Henry won although the car with the most potential was Liam’s and in Year 9L. However, it was Louie and Chris who had the most successful design.

Maybe a challenge if the summer needs some interfamily competition!
