Headmaster’s Welcome

Dear Parents and Families,

As we reach the end of another busy and rewarding week at Bethany, I find myself reflecting on the many reasons we have to be proud of our school community.

plus

From a highly successful Open Morning and inspiring Project-Based Learning presentations, to sporting achievements, leadership opportunities and everyday acts of kindness, pupils have continued to demonstrate the compassion, curiosity and courage that sit at the heart of Bethany.

I am particularly grateful to the pupils and parents who contributed to our Open Morning. The sun was shining brightly on Bethany, and our visitors enjoyed the very best of Bethany. They saw lessons, activities, displays, and they were even treated to the finale from last summer’s junior production of ‘Joseph’. But most importantly, they got to meet our pupils. No prospectus, or Headmaster’s speech can ever tell the Bethany story as well as our pupils.

Most importantly, this week has once again reminded me that Bethany is at its very best when we come together, celebrate one another’s successes, and encourage every individual to contribute to our community. I hope you enjoy reading more about the many highlights featured in this week’s newsletter

Kind regards,

Paul Jones

Headmaster

The latest sports news from Bethany School. A whole host of sport this week as various Bethany football team’s were all in action. The 1st XI hockey team also welcomed Claremont in their season opener.

Football | Bethany 1st XI v Claremont
plus

The Bethany 1st XI football team welcomed Claremont on Thursday in what turned out to be a very competitive and closely fought game, with both teams showing good quality and determination throughout.

Bethany started the match strongly and looked the more comfortable side during the opening 20 minutes. We controlled possession well, playing within contained areas and using purposeful passing to break lines and progress the ball.

The players worked extremely hard within their units, demonstrating good understanding and discipline. When under pressure, we were comfortable recycling possession back to the goalkeeper, who showed excellent composure and was very effective in helping us maintain possession and restart our attacks.

One of the most pleasing aspects of the performance was our reaction when possession was lost. The nearest player immediately looked to apply pressure, with teammates working hard to support and recover the ball. As a team, we were very effective at winning possession back quickly.

Following an excellent phase of sustained possession, we created a good attacking move down the defensive left-hand side, which resulted in Santiago scoring our opening goal.

Claremont gradually began to turn the tide, enjoying more possession and creating a number of opportunities as they looked to equalise. Bethany defended well and showed good resilience to take a 1–0 lead into half-time.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with both teams competing intensely and creating opportunities. Every Bethany player was tested physically and mentally, particularly in terms of fitness, concentration, decision-making and teamwork.

The players continued to work for one another and showed excellent character to maintain their intensity throughout the second half.

Overall, a very positive performance in a highly competitive match. The players demonstrated excellent work rate, possession discipline, resilience and, importantly, a strong willingness to work collectively when the game became difficult.

Final score: Bethany 3–2 Claremont

Player of the Match: Puya Katouzi

Coaches Player of the Match: Santiago Bragado Martin-Escanciano

Football | Bethany 2nd XI v Claremont
plus

Bethany 2nd XI welcomed Claremont on Thursday afternoon for a competitive and entertaining fixture, with both sides looking to make an early impact.

The opening quarter was played at a high tempo, with both teams pressing for an early goal and setting the tone for an exciting contest. As the half progressed, Bethany began to take control of the midfield, with Harry Russell and Michael St Clair Bishop particularly influential. Their ability to break up Claremont’s possession and play through the lines gave the Bethany attackers plenty of opportunities to threaten the Claremont defence.

Bethany increasingly dominated possession and began creating a number of scoring chances. When Claremont did manage to break forward on the counter, Thomas Gerrish and Laju Temile were excellent in defence, calmly dealing with the danger.

Special mention must also go to Sebastian Graham, who produced an excellent display in goal. His confident sweeping and ability to clear long balls that had bypassed the defence helped keep Claremont’s attacking threat under control.

Bethany’s sustained pressure eventually paid off when Claremont conceded a penalty for handball in the box. Captain David De la Roz Flynn stepped up and, for the second consecutive week, calmly placed the ball into the top-right corner to give Bethany a 1–0 lead.

Just before half-time, Bethany came agonisingly close to doubling their advantage, but Fikayomi Peters’ effort struck the crossbar.

After the break, Bethany continued to control possession and territory, playing some excellent flowing football. The left side of the pitch proved particularly effective, with Henry Greig driving forward and causing problems for the Claremont defence.

Accurate passing, combined with intelligent movement off the ball, created further shooting opportunities. Bethany hit the crossbar twice, struck the post and even saw an effort scrambled clear from the goal line as they searched for a second goal.

Eventually, the pressure told. Félix Hardie found the bottom corner with a well-struck shot to put Bethany 2–0 ahead.

Bethany continued to attack with energy while defending with composure and assurance. Their ability to deal with Claremont’s long-ball approach ensured that the visitors were unable to find a way back into the match.

It was an excellent footballing display from the whole squad, combining possession, attacking intent and disciplined defending to secure a deserved victory.

Final score: Bethany 2-0 Claremont

Player of the Match: Harry Russell

Coaches Player of the Match: Michael St Clair Bishop and Sebastian Graham

Football | Bethany U15A v Claremont
plus

The match began with both teams fairly evenly matched in terms of possession, with neither side able to establish clear control during the opening stages.

As the first half progressed, Bethany began to take greater control of the ball and demonstrated some excellent possession-based football. Players showed good awareness in finding space and time in different areas of the pitch, allowing Bethany to retain possession effectively and build attacks patiently.

However, the tempo of Bethany’s play was initially too slow. With both teams playing quite narrowly, Bethany found it difficult to create sufficient width and stretch the Claremont defensive structure. Claremont remained disciplined and resolute in their defensive duties, limiting Bethany’s opportunities and restricting them to just two goals during the first half.

At half-time, the players were encouraged to continue with their positive approach to possession but to increase the speed and purpose of their ball movement. The focus was on moving the ball more quickly through the thirds, using the wider areas of the pitch and varying the point of attack. This was intended to make Bethany less predictable and create greater opportunities to penetrate the opposition.

Bethany responded exceptionally well in the second half. The increased tempo, improved use of width and quicker movement of the ball created greater attacking opportunities and placed considerably more pressure on the Claremont defence.

The players demonstrated excellent application of the half-time instructions and produced a much-improved second-half performance, eventually securing an impressive 6–1 victory.

Final score: Bethany 6-1 Claremont

Player of the Match: Arlo Emly

Coaches Player of the Match: Ollie Scott

Football | Bethany U15A v Benenden
plus

Normally associated with poor weather, the now regular girls’ football fixture against Benenden School was, for a change, played in warm and pleasant conditions. The U15A team made the short journey to face familiar opposition in what proved to be another closely contested encounter between two evenly matched sides.

Both teams started brightly, creating early chances as play went from end to end. However, the hard Astro surface made controlling the ball difficult, with the unpredictable bounce causing problems throughout the match. Benenden opened the scoring when a bouncing ball over the top evaded the Bethany goalkeeper, allowing the hosts to finish well and take the lead.

Bethany responded quickly and with confidence. Excellent close control and skill from Daisy Young down the right wing created the opportunity, and her well-placed cross found Darcey Stone, who passed the ball into the path of Darcie Vidler. Having only just entered the game as a substitute, Darcie made an immediate impact by scoring with her very first touch to level the scores.

Bethany then went ahead through Juniper Ambrose-Gordon, whose goal came after sustained pressure on the Benenden defensive line. With Isla Cooper, Libby King and Millie Flanders producing some excellent passages of play in midfield, Bethany looked comfortable and in control of the game.

Unfortunately, another defensive error gifted Benenden an equaliser, allowing the hosts to finish into a large, unguarded net and draw level. In defence, Betsy Spruce and Eva Lambert were outstanding as a Centre-Back pairing, reading the game well and consistently breaking up Benenden attacks. Bethany survived a last minute scare with an opposition Free kick going close but a well-positioned defensive wall arranged by Keeper Kitty Mackay thankfully averted the danger.

The match ultimately ended in a draw, but it represented another strong performance and a further positive step forward for Bethany Girls’ Football.

Final score: Bethany 2-2 Benenden

Player of the Match: Juniper Ambrose-Gordon

Coaches Player of the Match: Betsy Spruce and Eva Lambert

Football | Bethany U15B v Claremont
plus

Bethany started brightly, with an immediate high press putting the Claremont defence under pressure. Within just 15 seconds, Cameron Stanley pounced on a defensive mistake to open the scoring.

Bethany dominated possession throughout the first half, with centre-backs Leo Etherington and Harry Knight composed and effective at the back, nullifying any Claremont counter-attacks. In midfield, Harun Al Barznji and Freddie Crampin controlled the game brilliantly, linking play through the lines and creating plenty of opportunities for Cameron and Gus Tomlinson.

Cameron Stanley added his second of the afternoon, while Harun Al Barznji and Gus Tomlinson also found the net to give Bethany a commanding lead at the break.

Despite several changes in personnel and positions after half-time, Bethany continued with the same high-pressing approach, keeping Claremont pinned in their own half. The team produced some excellent football, combining composure, awareness, direct passing and intelligent movement off the ball.

Nico De Widt added a particularly impressive goal, cutting in from the left side of the box and finding the top corner. William Crampin and Freddie Crampin also got on the scoresheet as Claremont began to fade.

Overall, it was a very strong team performance, with every player contributing to an impressive 8–0 victory.

Final score: Bethany 8-0 Claremont

Player of the Match: Leo Etherington and Harun Al Barznji

Coaches Player of the Match: Cameron Stanley and Harry Knight

Football | Bethany U13A v Benenden
plus

It is often said that you learn more from losing in sport than from winning, and that certainly proved true for this week’s U13A Girls’ football match against Benenden School.

Facing a stronger, taller, and more experienced opposition, the U13A girls found it difficult to gain any real foothold in the game. Benenden controlled much of the play and created numerous chances throughout the match, testing the resilience and determination of the team from start to finish.

The standout performance came from goalkeeper Tabitha Hindley, who was kept extremely busy throughout the contest. Producing a series of brave saves and under constant pressure, Tabitha worked tirelessly to keep her side in the game. Without her impressive efforts between the posts, the final scoreline could have been much heavier.

There were also strong performances from Captain Phoebe Cowell, who led by example and worked hard to be involved in every aspect of the game. Her determination and positivity helped keep the team motivated despite the difficult circumstances. In defence, Mia Yusuff delivered another solid display, making important challenges and showing composure against a talented attacking side.

While it was undoubtedly a tough afternoon for the team, matches such as these provide valuable learning experiences. The girls showed character and resilience throughout and will undoubtedly return stronger, more determined, and better prepared for the challenges ahead.

Final score: Bethany 0-7 Benenden

Player of the Match: Phoebe Cowell

Coaches Player of the Match: Tabitha Hindley

Football | Bethany U13A v Farrington’s
plus

Bethany U13A opened their season with a really encouraging performance against a strong and physical Farrington’s side.

In previous years, this type of game may have seen us shy away from the physical challenge, but the boys did exactly the opposite. They competed extremely well, got stuck into the game and showed plenty of determination throughout.

Alongside that competitive edge, there were also some really positive passages of football. For a first game of the season, it was already clear to see combinations and connections beginning to develop across the team, which gives us plenty to build on over the coming weeks.

Despite the 5–2 defeat, there were lots of positives to take from the performance and we are really looking forward to seeing how this squad develops throughout the season.

Final score: Bethany 2-5 Farrington’s

Player of the Match: Theo Thornton

Coaches Player of the Match: Lucas Holdsworth

Football | Bethany U13A v Bede’s
plus

Bethany produced an excellent all-round performance against Bede’s, playing some fantastic attacking football and showing real quality throughout the game.

From the opening stages, the team moved the ball extremely well and created chances through some excellent combinations and positive forward play. As the game progressed, Bethany continued to dominate and were clinical in front of goal, eventually running out impressive 11–1 winners.

One of the highlights of the afternoon was an excellent hat-trick from Wilbur Shorter, who was a constant threat going forward and capped off a very strong individual display.

Overall, it was a really positive team performance, with plenty of excellent football on show and contributions from across the squad.

Final score: Bethany 11-1 Bede’s

Player of the Match: Wilbur Shorter

Coaches Player of the Match: Isaac Outram

Football | Bethany U13B v Bede’s
plus

The Bethany U13B team travelled to Bede’s on Wednesday afternoon and made an excellent start, immediately putting the Bede’s defence under pressure with energetic pressing straight from the kick off. This forced hurried passes and mistakes, and a flurry of early Bethany goals quickly set the tone for the afternoon.

Bethany played with confidence and control, moving the ball well and creating a number of excellent scoring opportunities. Francis Mason, Wilf Cottingham and Wilfred Davies were particularly impressive, winning back possession, creating chances and showing a willingness to shoot whenever the opportunity arose.

The Year 7 players also made a strong contribution, with Spencer Valentine Brown, Rafael Barkway, Max Shephard and Wilfred Goodman all putting in very good performances.

Bethany went into half-time with a convincing lead.

The second half brought new challenges, with players changing positions and restrictions placed on the number of touches they could take. Despite these changes, the team continued to perform well, showing determination in the tackle, driving forward with purpose and finishing accurately. Several more goals followed as Bethany maintained their control of the game.

A thoroughly convincing performance and a well-deserved win for Bethany U13B.

Player of the Match: Francis Mason and Wilfred Davies

Coaches Player of the Match: Rafael Barkway

Hockey | Bethany 1st XI v Claremont
plus

On Thursday, Bethany 1st XI Girls welcomed Claremont for their first full competitive fixture of the season, and it proved to be a brilliant contest from start to finish.

It was really pleasing to see our patterns of play beginning to develop, with the girls moving the ball well and showing increasing confidence in possession. Bethany opened the scoring through Maisie Frankum, who finished superbly to give us a 1–0 lead at the end of the first third.

Claremont started the second third strongly and found an equaliser, but Bethany responded brilliantly. Maisie Frankum produced an excellent driving run before finishing powerfully to score her second of the game and restore our lead at 2–1.

Once again, Claremont came out strongly in the final third and managed to level the game at 2–2. The score remained that way until the very final play, when Bethany won a penalty corner.

With the last opportunity of the game, Maisie Frankum and Safi Chettiar combined brilliantly from a well-worked routine, before Safi calmly buried the ball into the bottom corner to secure a dramatic 3–2 victory.

It was a fantastic way to finish the game and a really encouraging performance from the whole squad in our first proper fixture of the season.

Final score: Bethany 3–2 Claremont

Player of the Match: Maisie Frankum

Coaches Player of the Match: Sophie Finamore

Maisie Makes History with Tonbridge Angels
plus

We are delighted to celebrate the fantastic footballing achievements of Maisie, Year 13, who is enjoying her second season playing women’s football for Tonbridge Angels.

Following her time at academy level with Crystal Palace, Maisie made the move into women’s football and has quickly made an impressive impact. Last season, her team finished runners-up in the league, going an incredible 16 games unbeaten and securing promotion to Tier 6.

This season has brought even greater success, with Tonbridge Angels currently competing in the FA Cup Third Round Proper – the furthest any Tonbridge Angels team, men’s or women’s, has ever progressed in the competition.

A remarkable achievement for Maisie and her teammates. We wish them every success for the rest of their historic FA Cup campaign!

Enrichment Spotlight: Buttercups Goat Sanctuary

During the first Enrichment Carousel cycle of the academic year, Kipling’s Team 10 enjoyed a rewarding visit to Buttercup Goat Sanctuary. This trip gave pupils a fantastic opportunity to step outside their comfort zones, build new skills, and actively contribute to the daily care of the sanctuary’s rescued goats.

The afternoon was a wonderful mix of hard work and hands-on engagement. Pupils rolled up their sleeves to muck out the stabling and pitched in to top up the goats’ feed. Afterward, they spent a very agreeable time interacting directly with the animals, carefully brushing them down and hand feeding them.

Reflecting on the day, it was inspiring to see how readily the pupils embraced the experience. I was particularly impressed by the way they stepped up, faced new challenges, and enthusiastically tackled tasks they would not ordinarily have thought to try.

Artwork produced by Bethany pupils has brightened the walls of the year groups shared space and FOBS kindly granted funds to help support the purchasing of new table top games, pin boards for notices and a selection of mini pool tables along side air hockey tables to keep the pupils entertained in their break times.

Pupil involvement in the selection of both the artwork and suggesting popular items has been much appreciated as they take ownership of this space. It has been a pleasure to see the pupils re-enter their new and improved day room and engage with this space in a more purposeful way during their free time.

At Bethany, we are very fortunate to have such a supportive parent body with FOBs and their support of this project will no doubt be appreciated through this academic year and beyond.

However, the main social space that they get to enjoy is their Day Room. Year 7 have their own space where they can relax, meet, and catch up at breaktimes.

This year, the Friends of Bethany School (FOBS) kindly funded the buying of some new items for the pupils to add to what is already available to play with in there. With their generous support we were able to purchase a giant connect four set, a jumbo chess set and several boardgames and puzzles.

It has been lovely this week witnessing the pupils socialise whilst using these new items and continue to build friendships that will no doubt continue as they move up through the School and beyond.

We are very fortunate to have such an active and supportive parent body in the form of FOBS at Bethany, and I have no doubt that the pupils will be very pleased with the new items in the space.

This is the result of many years of work, and we are particularly grateful for the support of Goudhurst Parish Council, our neighbours, the local community and Tunbridge Wells Borough Council in helping to make this possible and supporting this important next step for the school.

Bethany offers a range of high-quality facilities that provide many opportunities for clubs, community groups, schools and local businesses to use them. These include our Pengelly Performance Centre and the 25 metre, six-lane swimming pool, alongside a variety of facilities available for sports and fitness activities, meetings, events and conferences.

We are proud of our existing relationships with several local football teams who already use our Astro multi-use pitch for training sessions, in addition to our charitable support of local primary schools.

Our facilities are available at times that complement the school day and boarding programme, allowing the local community to benefit without impacting the experience of our pupils.

As part of this initiative, we have created a new Partnership Manager role and are pleased to welcome Dr Louise Vickerman who joined us on 1st September 2026. Louise will lead the development of new partnerships, welcoming organisations and businesses to the school, and help to make the most of Bethany’s fantastic facilities for the benefit of the local community.

Louise said:

“It’s a great opportunity to bring people together, build strong relationships and create partnerships that work for everyone. There are some fantastic opportunities ahead and I’m really looking forward to getting started.”
