Cooking Up Confidence
This week’s blog is written by our Head of Food and Nutrition, Mrs Iles, who shares how Food and Nutrition at Bethany is a vibrant, skills-rich subject. Through progressive practical work, cultural exploration and real-world learning, pupils develop confidence, creativity and independence, gaining valuable life skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
At Bethany, the Food and Nutrition department is a vibrant, practical space where pupils develop lifelong skills that extend far beyond the classroom. From Year 7, pupils learn that successful cooking begins with cleanliness, organisation and food hygiene, building confidence and independence that runs throughout KS3.
In Year 7, pupils focus on essential life skills: basic knife techniques, safe use of the hob, oven and kettle, and familiarity with everyday kitchen equipment. These early “firsts” lay the foundation for confident home cooking.
By Year 8, pupils broaden their culinary horizons through dishes from around the world, such as egg fried rice, carbonara and Welsh cakes. Alongside this, they explore food provenance and sustainability, tracing ingredients from farm to plate and developing a deeper understanding of food systems.
Year 9 builds further confidence through more demanding individual and team challenges. Highlights include the Smashed Burger Challenge, complete with homemade bread rolls, and the advanced skill of making puff pastry for sausage rolls. Across KS3, pupils produce a wide range of dishes, gaining pride, independence and recipes they can recreate at home.
In KS4, pupils refine their technical skills and deepen their understanding of the food industry. Year 10 focuses on classic dishes such as lasagne, cottage pie and minestrone, while also introducing food safety, legal requirements and professional practice. In Year 11, pupils complete their controlled assessment, bringing together planning, creativity, technical skill and customer-focused thinking.
This year, the department was enriched by a visit from Spanish pupils, who brought enthusiasm and cultural flair. From everyday skills to a full tapas feast and inventive exam dishes, their contribution added warmth and creativity to the food room.
Across all year groups, high-achieving pupils inspire others by refining presentation, flavour and technique. The food room at Bethany is a place of energy, discovery and enjoyment, where pupils learn not just how to cook, but how to problem-solve, work together and take pride in creating something truly excellent.
