Each week, as part of the Enrichment programme at Bethany School, a team of pupils take part in an eco gardening activity. Eco gardening is all about learning and putting into practice a range of sustainable gardening skills. It encourages us to understand nature and the seasons while actively engaging in environmentally friendly activities.

At Bethany, we are currently working alongside Dave and Jonathon from the Estates team to plan and carry out practical tasks that are suited to the time of year. This means our work changes with the seasons, making sure it stays relevant and beneficial to the environment.

One of our key aims is to support and increase local wildlife and promote eco-diversity around the school grounds. For example, last week, a group of pupils took part in weeding an area and then planted wildflower seeds, which will provide food and shelter for bees, butterflies and other pollinators in the spring. We also carried out a litter pick to help prevent animals and birds from eating plastic or becoming entangled in waste.

This week’s tasks include planting a range of spring-flowering bulbs and raking fallen leaves, which helps improve soil health and keeps the area tidy.
